Lesson Plan Title : A Comparison of the Celebrations of Cinco de Mayo

Overview and Purpose: Cinco de Mayo has become a popular holiday in the United States. In this lesson, students research and compare the different ways a holiday is celebrated in Mexico and the United States.

Objective: The student will be able to compare how Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Mexico and the United States.

Discuss Cinco de Mayo with your students. Explain that it has become a very popular holiday in the United States. Have the students use the Internet to research and compare the different ways the holiday is celebrated in Mexico and the United States. They should look at things like types of celebrations, number of people who celebrate, and the amount of money people spend. After the students are finished, come back together and discuss their results.

Wrap Up:

This activity can be extended by having each student write a persuasive paper about whether the way the holiday is celebrated in the United States or in Mexico is better.
