Zoo

Introduction:
OH NO!!! The animals at the local zoo have escaped! As a community, we are going to get together and help the zoologist put the animals back where they belong.
Task:
You will be researching the following animals to figure out what environment they need to live in to survive.
Bear Parrot Seal
Lion Zebra Toucan
Whale Lizard Elephant
Snake Penguin Frog

There are a few different ways that you can show were the animals will go. You need to choose at least 3 animals to save, one from each environment. One choice is to draw a poster size version of the zoo with the animals in their proper homes. Another choice is to create a diorama of the zoo if you prefer a real life model. If you want to use the computer, you could design the zoo using Power Point. Before designing the zoo you need to tell the teacher your ideas for creating it.

You will be using the Internet to research the animals.
Process:
  1. First you will be assigned to a group of four students.
2. Next you will work together at a computer to complete this activity.
3. After you have chosen the animals you are going to save, you need to go to the library or use the internet to begin researching the types of environment that the animals can live in. In your research you need to find out what parts of the animal help them survive in this type of environment. You must also look for the food that they will need to survive. Some animals may require a specific "home", for example a cave. Be sure to identify the animal's home. Record results on worksheet provided. This worksheet will help you organize your research. Print this worksheet and fill it in as you find information about possible environments for your animals to live in.
4. Use resources below to find links to WebPages that will be helpful in your search for animals.
5. Then you can begin designing your own zoo.
6. CHALLENGE!! Find 3 animals that can coexist in each animals habitat and record them in your zoo.

Evaluation:
Each group will be graded as a whole, make sure all jobs are split up evenly. This assignment counts as a test grade.
1 Beginning
2 Developing
3 Accomplished
4 Exemplary

The student will classify 3 animals environments The student can state 1 animals environment. The student can state 2 animals environments. The student can state 3 animals environments The student clearly states all 3 animals environments and completes the challenge.

The student will be able to list the different shelter and parts of the body that enable them to live in this environment.
The student can list one of the three characteristics that help an animal survive in an environment. The student can list two of the three characteristics that help an animal survive in an environment. The student can list all three characteristics that help an animal survive in an environment. The student can list all three characteristics that help an animal survive in an environment and complete the challenge.

The student will design a zoo that includes the three animals and their appropriate habitats.

The student has designed the zoo appropriate for 1 animal he/she chose using a teacher approved method. The student has designed the zoo appropriate for 2 animals he/she chose using a teacher approved method. The student has designed the zoo appropriate for 3 animals he/she chose using a teacher approved method. The student has designed the zoo that is appropriate for the 3 animals he/she chose. The zoo including the 3 additional animals that would co-exist in their environment.
Conclusion:
Congratulations! You have designed a zoo and gave animals a home!! In doing so, you should have learned that there many types of habitats animals can live in. Hopefully, you can also identify 3 animals that live in this habitat and give examples of the shelters and body parts that help them survive in this environment.
Now ask someone to take you to a zoo near you so that you can visit the animals there. Maybe you will see a zoo that is similar to the one you designed! Look also at the other habitats represented there and try to identify each one.
