US in Korea

Introduction:
Imagine the government of the United States is crippled with fear of the unknown. One of the biggest, wealthiest, strongest countries in the world are shaking in their boots, and over what? An idea. A philosophy. A power that the country feels is a threat to its very existence. Communism. An idea that seems to be the antithesis of the American political system and the capitalistic foundation the US has been thriving on. The United States comes to feel that the "Domino Theory" is the most likely outcome to the ever growing specter of the rising "Red Tide". The U.S. is so sure that this wave of red is about to wash over the world and drown the ideas of freedom and the American way they make it priority one to stem the flow. The United States had been growing and exercising its new found predominance in the world for the better part of the last century and have no desire to lose their growing hold on global politics and money. What is the United States to do? The American government decides to go on the offensive and stop the red scourge far short of American shores by plugging the dam in Southeast Asia. The battleground will be Korea and one of the earliest battles of the Cold War will be fought there. How exactly did the United States come to a military offensive in Korea? And what did it mean for the future?
Task:
Individually you will conduct a search of the internet to determine the major actions, ideas, and politics surrounding the eventual arrival of the American military in Southeast Asia and what the outcome of the Korea War meant to the future of the United States and its strength as a world power. As a final product each student will create a timeline of the events that led up to the American involvement in the Korean War, what significant circumstances took place while America was in Southeast Asia and finally what were the long term consequences of America's involvement overseas and towards it's position as a world power. Students will share their finished products in small groups on the date the assignment is due.
Process:
The finished timeline will include the following:
1. A timeline that includes 15 separate events that are inclusive of causes for American involvement in Korea, major events that occurred within the Korean campaign, and lastly examples of long lasting effects of American war in Korea and the US position of power in the world.
2. Each annotation on the timeline will include a graphic representation of the event.
3. Each annotation of the timeline will include a four to five sentence summary of the reason why this event was chosen for the timeline and how it fits into one of the three categories listed in #1.
4. Timeline should be visually stimulating and interesting.

Evaluation:
  Three points:
1. Great
2. Fair
3. Poor

Great
1. Research- The student has shown the use of the majority of websites in finding data to support the information used on their timeline.

2. Timeline Events - writing - The student has 15 separate events that fit into the three categories given to fulfill the assignment. Each of the events listed on the timeline have a minimum of four sentences used to support the choice of that particular event and its importance to the Korean conflict.

3. Visual Impact - The timeline has a interesting and visually impressive title (more than likely including a subheading). The timeline includes 15 visual representations for each of the events on the timeline that are relevant to explaining the event used on the timeline. Color is used throughout the timeline to add to its visual appeal.

4. Overall Project - The project has met all the requirements listed above. The project has a cohesion to the visual and writing elements. Timeline is easy to follow and the information is presented in clear and concise manner that focuses on the overall themes of the project.

Fair
1. Research- The student has shown the use of many of the websites in finding data to support the information used on their timeline.

2. Timeline Events - Writing - The student has placed between 11 and 14 events on their timeline and most events fit into one of the three categories given to fulfill the assignment. Each of the events listed on the timeline have between two and three sentences used to support the choice of that particular event and its influence on the Korean conflict.

3. Visual Impact - The timeline has a title. But lacks any splashy attention grabbing detail to draw in the viewer. Title is bland and lacks any witty subheading. The timeline includes 11 to 14 visual representations of information appearing on the timeline. Has a lack of visuals that are relevant to the subjects put upon the timeline. Color is used sporadically throughout the timeline, leading to an overall diminishing of the visual impact of the project.

4. Overall Project - The project has met a substantial amount of the requirements listed above. The project has a good flow. But has a few elements out of place that make it hard to understand or follow. The themes of the project are represented in a majority of the pieces placed upon the timeline.

Poor
1. Research- The student has shown a minimal use of the websites in finding data to support the information used on their timeline.

2. Timeline Events - Writing - The student has placed less than 11 events on their timeline and only a few of the events chosen fit into one of the three categories given to fulfill the assignment. Each of the events listed on the timeline have between one and two sentences used to support the choice of that particular event and its influence on the Korean conflict.

3. Visual Impact - The timeline lacks any title or includes a rudimentary title that doesn't address the topic of the timeline and generally lacks any eye grabbing detail to draw the viewer in. The timeline includes less than 11 overall visual images for the project. A majority of these visuals are not related tot he topics and information presented in the writing portion of the assignment. Color is absent or barely used to enhance the visual appeal of the project.

4. Overall Project - The project has fallen far short of the requirements listed above. The project is sloppy and hard to understand. There is little connectedness between the items placed upon the timeline and their relevance to the overall themes.
