Explore Alabama

Introduction:
After researching all five geographical provinces of Alabama, the student will analyze and construct maps, diagrams and presenations of one of the five land regions of Alabama.

You have been chosen by the United States government as a top notch geologist to study the specifics of the five geographical provinces of the state of Alabama.

Guiding Question:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the location of a particular geographic land region?
Task:
Your team will be asked to present your findings in a PowerPoint and your expertise will be used to write a new Alabama History book for students in elementary schools all over the state of Alabama.
Process:
  Step 1
Independent Work:
Create a map of the five geographical features. You may use crayons and markers or any available technology to complete a creative presentation of the map. This is an independent assignment and each student must turn in a completed map.

Step 2
Group Work:
Assign group members to jobs.

Time Keeper: Keeps all students on task. Keeps track of time and is responsible for any supplies needed.

Notetaker: takes notes with neat, legible handwriting or typing, notes important information and eliminates wordiness

Creative Director: directs the creativity of the presentation and organization of pages, making sure audience can clearly read each page

Data Manager (2 if group of 5): research using internet with help of teammates, makes sure important information has been included in presentation

Each group will need to download and complete one copy of the information chart. This is to be turned in. One per group!

Research the following websites to find the information below:

-Who occupied each region (inhabitants)

-Relationship of each region to the settlers

-Natural resources of each region

-Natural environment of each region

-Details of the environment created by the settlers that occupied each region

Use websites listed under resources:

Step 3
Use the data for your group's region and make a PowerPoint that will provide knowledge and information on that region. Each student should be responsible for at least 2 pages of your presentation. You will need to include the following:

-a title page with all group member's name and the name of your group's region

-Who occupied each region (inhabitants) page

Ex. a specific group

-Relationship of each region to the settlers page

Ex. the relationship of the region to the movement of Alabama settlers

-Natural resources of each region page

-Ex. water, trees, coal, soil

-Natural environment of each region page

-Ex. wildlife, vegetation, climate, bodies of water

-Details of the environment created by the settlers that occupied each region page

-Ex. housing, roads, places names

**Everyone is required to participate in the second and third task. Each member must provide some insight or knowledge for the presentation, this includes design, input, information, and organization. I suggest that each person be responsible for at least two pages of the PowerPoint presentation.
