Are teachers adequately prepared to teach for the 21st century?

Being prepared to teach in the 21st century means different things to different teachers. For many it probably has to do with technological advancements. Students have more free time with which to keep up with change and some teachers are feeling left behind. Something new seems to appear on the market on a regular basis and unless you have the time to learn about it, before you know it the next new thing has shown up and now you're two steps behind.

There are many issues that complicate student matters. For example, bullying has always been present to a lesser or greater degree but nowadays several factors have complicated the issue. Cyber bullying and the presence of weapons in schools have ramped up the threat of bullying to a degree not seen previously. Teachers and parents alike are often unprepared for situations that can quickly get out of control. Let's not forget that when things do go crazy there is often someone there to video the event and put it on the web. This is not the same world that many of us grew up in.

Given these types of complications it's not surprising that the majority of teachers do not feel prepared to teach in the 21st century. The results of this poll showed an almost two to one ratio of those who felt unprepared to those who were ready. If it's any consolation, many people in all walks of life feel unprepared as well. Politicians, for example, are dealing with social media sites potentially influencing election results as voting proceeds in different time zones. Technology has changed the landscape and we are all left trying to figure out new ways to do old things.

Unfortunately, students may know more about the new technology than their parents and teachers but are blissfully unaware of the repercussions. Cyber stalking or having embarrassing moments broadcast literally to the world can deeply affect students and they do not realize what is happening until it is too late.

So if you are feeling unprepared, don't despair. Join the club and realize that a great many of us of muddling our way through the same issues.
