Ask Our Experts- ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "I am a SpEd major wondering if it is better to get my master's before I get into my own classroom, or should I start teaching and get my master's while I am in my own classroom?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: Pursuing a master's degree while you are teaching can provide a support system for you. You get to meet other teachers and you can develop a good network that can help you through the lived experiences of teaching. However, it is not a bad thing to complete a master's degree before accepting a teaching position. Good luck with your decision. ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "How does a dedicated teacher deal with confrontational parents. Any ideas?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: It is difficult to recommend strategies for dealing with "confrontational" parents without knowing the details of the situation. Sometimes parents are confrontational because they have been disappointed with outcomes in the past. However, whatever the case, as a dedicated teacher, you always need to know the facts and keep accurate documentation for you to use when communicating with parents. Keep the communication professional and objective. Be confident in your approach and keep the conversation focused; have a written agenda that you will follow to keep things on track. Take notes and follow up with a memo highlighting what was discussed with specific action steps to be evaluated over a period of time. Communication is key! Parents who are normally confrontational need ongoing communication about the progress of their child. By keeping them informed, you can avoid any doubts or questions about what you are doing with their child. If a parent continues to confront you, it is wise to include school adminstration as an intervention that may need to take place. The bottom line is that you must remain professional at all times! By: Sonya, 5th Grade Teacher: Nevada "Choose two students to stand up and have all the other students put their heads down on their desks with their eyes closed and a thumb sticking up. The two left standing must then move around the desks and gently touch just one person each on the thumb. All students are then to open their eyes. The two students who had their thumbs touched, must then guess who touched their thumb. If they get it right the children swap places if not the children have to go again. This game is great to use for settling a class down after after a busy day and it improves their listening skills." ============================================================= Teachnology, Inc. makes no warranties, either expressed or implied, about the truth or accuracy of the content of the TeAch-nology.com newsletter. ============================================================= If you are interested in sponsoring this newsletter place your order online at: http://www.teach-nology.com/advertising/ ============================================================= © 2001 Teachnology, Inc.
