Ask Our Experts- ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "Where can I locate information regarding New York State Document Based Question exam in Social Studies?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: Try going to the New York State web site found on the following page: http://www.teach-nology.com/teachers/standards/by_state/ Good luck! ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "I have two non English speaking hispanic students. (I also have a regular classroom of 22 6th grade students.) What should I do to help my hispanic students. I have no other resources at this time. Today, the girl has begun to cry. I think she is homesick, but communication is poor." ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: Try pairing english speaking students who are interested in providing assistance or support to the hispanic speaking students. When teaching any lessons, provide pictures or visuals that may assist the hispanic speaking students in understanding what you are talking about. Add hands-on activities that students can perform together "cooperatively" so that 'all' students feel that they are participating. You can also see if you can find any hispanic speaking senior citizens (bi-lingual) who may be interested in doing some volunteer work as tutors or coaches during the school day. Also, you can carry a bi-lingual dictionary to assist you in communicating important messages to your two students. The bottom line is that you should make every effort to foster communication. Good luck! ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "How do you start to teach basic math facts?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "The best way to teach anything is by breaking the basic concepts down to the simplest form and providing enough practice to apply the concepts operationally." ============================================================= 10. "Our Latest Idea That Worked!" "The Olympics at Your School" By: Judy, K-12 PE Teacher: Detroit, Michigan "Have "Olympic Trials" at your school. Announce early on that there will be trials and invite students to compete. Give the students the criteria ahead of time and make the expectations clear. Schedule school wide Olympic Games to take place either in the Winter (some time in February) or the Summer (end of the school year). Each grade can pick individual athletes who can compete against each other. Arrange to have ceremonies foe awards and invite community news agencies. This is a great idea to enable students who are not academically prone to gain recognition for other gifts and talents." ------------------------------------------------------------- **To Submit An Idea That Worked For You, Click Below: http://www.teach-nology.com/ideas/tell_us/ ============================================================= Teachnology, Inc. makes no warranties, either expressed or implied, about the truth or accuracy of the content of the TeAch-nology.com newsletter. ============================================================= If you are interested in sponsoring this newsletter place your order online at: http://www.teach-nology.com/advertising/ ============================================================= © 2001 Teachnology, Inc.
