Site of the week- School Notes- http://www.schoolnotes.com/ If you're looking for a simple and effective way to communicate with both parents and students at home, then School Notes is the place for you. School Notes complements school websites by allowing teachers to post school information on the world-wide-web without worrying about HTML or FTP because there is no programming required! If you have used a word processor before, you should have little trouble using School Notes. Once you have created your School Notes account, parents and students can quickly and easily check your notes via a standard Internet connection. While there have been a number of services similar to School Notes available, few have been totally free. Many services have started using free models and then when teachers began to rely on it, they changed their business model to a pay service. We feel that School Notes will buck this trend. As explained by EdGate, Inc., "There are no hidden costs for the community to use SchoolNotes.com and there are no plans to charge a service fee in the future." "As a free community service, SchoolNotes.com increases opportunities for families to be more involved in their children's learning while facilitating family-school-community partnerships which strengthen education through improved communication." ============================================================= 2. Ask Our Experts- ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "What are some personal attributes that a person can possess?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "It is most important for teachers to have personal attributes that help them form positive relationships with the students they will be teaching. Included in the list are honesty, integrity and foresight! Within the framework of these attributes are good communication and interpersonal skills." ************************************************************* A question from Evelyn: "I am an ABD in Special Ed. I live in Venezuela and wish to finish my doctoral research requirement. Please let me know about dissertation resources that include sample dissertations in the area of adaptive computing. Thanks so much for your help." ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "TeAch-nology.com offers a list of resources specific to "assistive technology." Just click on: http://www.teach-nology.com/teachers/special_ed/asstive_tech/ Good luck with your dissertation." ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "What factors do you take into account when establishing grading policies and why? Consider these 5 factors: achievement, aptitude, effort, compliance, and attitude. I am concerned with the 1st Grade classroom." ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: A really good resource that may help with grading practices can be found at: http://www.uga.berkeley.edu/sled/bgd/grading.html Although this may be written for higher grade levels, you may find some information that may be relevant to your situation as a primary grade teacher. Good luck! ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "What's the best way to get paid on the job training as a science teacher?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "There are many school districts that are facing a teacher shortage. As a result, these districts are offering opportunities for people with strong liberal arts backgrounds (baccalaureate degrees especially in math and science)to teach while getting the appropriate training. The most important thing is that the support is provided to the person placed in a classroom. Many teacher education programs are partnering with schools to provide the necessary training for people to succeed in such cases." ************************************************************* A question from SDJackson: "I am looking to persue a teaching career. I would like to take on a teaching assistant position. My challenge is that I currently don't have much experience. What can I add to my cover letter if I am short on the experience??" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "Your cover letter should include a philosophy statement on your beliefs regarding teaching and learning. Depending on your state's education requirement, you should emphasize your willingness to support whatever standards the state specifies. (Check "standards" section in teacher resources to find out what your state requires.) All this information should be written in the context in which you would like to learn "all of the above" in a teaching assistant role that can better prepare you to pursue a teaching career." ============================================================= 10. "Our Latest Idea That Worked!" By: Sandy Kemsley, Former Elementary Teacher; http://abcteach.com "Tattle No More!" "My third and fourth graders use to tattle all day long. I told them that I could not listen to that many tattles a day. Instead of saying no tattles, I told them they could have one tattle a day. I explained that it was more that fair because, I would still have to listen to 28 tattles. Once they tattled, they could not tattle again until the next day. They were so protective of that one tattle, that most of them didn't use it. In a couple of weeks the problem disappeared. :)" ------------------------------------------------------------- **To Submit An Idea That Worked For You, Click Below: http://www.teach-nology.com/ideas/tell_us/ ============================================================= Please take the time to visit our sponsors, this newsletter would not be possible without their support. ============================================================= Teachnology, Inc. makes no warranties, either expressed or implied, about the truth or accuracy of the content of the TeAch-nology.com newsletter. ============================================================= If you are interested in sponsoring this newsletter place your order online at: http://www.teach-nology.com/advertising/ ============================================================= © 2000 Teachnology, Inc.
