Jokes You Can Tell In Class- "Paint Supply" Paints were a very precious quantity in the good old days, and British merchants could make a small fortune supplying paints to the colonies. One company sent a clipper ship full of red paint across the ocean. It had the very bad luck to collide with another ship full of blue paint. As a result of this disaster, both crews were ... marooned. ------------------------------------------------------------- Like Jokes?? Download of the Week- PC Download: Vocabulary Fitness- "Vocabulary Fitness is a self-paced skill-building software program that helps students improve their vocabulary skills and provides teachers with measurable results. The program helps students master commonly confused and misused words. After an assessment, students work on specific words, or learn in a mixed practice format. They receive help and contextual feedback. They are able to track their progress through their progress-to-date and session scores. Students' scores are kept in a management system that allows teachers to view and print reports. Designed for students in the U.S. grades 4 through 9 (age 9 and up). The program can be used as well by beginner ESL and adult students." ------------------------------------------------------------- Mac Download: eQuiz- "This program is an easy to use utility for giving and taking quizzes. It is still under development, but most bugs have been removed and we are now in the stage of feature additions. It is designed for teachers to use in a classroom setting." Ask Our Experts- ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "What do you suggest for Internet filtering?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "Just for people that aren't familiar with filters, content filters are one or more pieces of software that work together to prevent users from viewing explicit materials found on the Internet. We feel that a server-side solution provided by an outside agency (ISP) is by far the best option. The reason is two fold: 1) it puts the burden in the hands of people who make their living doing this stuff and 2) it also relieves schools of a great deal of liability. The method that they use would have to be based on the type of server and client that the schools are using. If financially that is not feasible, we would suggest the client software Internet Protect (http://www.hot.ee/ip5/). Simply due to ease of use and reliability. For server software, we would suggest Rule Space (http://www.rulespace.com/). Rule Space filters themes rather keyword, making it more accurate. A few contacts of ours hated filters, until they installed this product. For installation, you may want to hire an outside tech. It can be a little tricky." ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "Is there anyway to make a template on Microsoft Word where there can be protected areas and the students can complete the worksheet on the computer without changing the ordinal form?? Hope that made sense." ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "When using Word, you can create what are called "Master Documents." A Master Document basically allows you to lock areas within the document and then you're free to fill sub documents within the document itself. For more information on using Master Documents see the help section of MS Word." ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "I have a 5th grade student with difficulty following directions, oral or written. I have already tried simplifying, repeating, practicing simple directions, etc. Are there any other strategies?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: You may want to make a functional behavioral assessment for this student. We have a great tutorial on FBAs at: http://www.teach-nology.com/tutorials/teaching/fba/ ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "I need information on writing a personal resume" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: There is an area on www.teach-nology.com that helps with resume writing. Just go to: http://www.teach-nology.com/web_tools/ and click on "Resume Materials Generator." Good luck! ************************************************************* A question from SDJackson: "My son is a 9 year old in a private school in northern NJ. He does extremlely well academically, however, his behavior needs improvement. I spoke up about him not being challenged more, and now there is a serious breakdown in communication. I am seeking an advocay group to help me in this endeavor." ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: Resource that can help you find an advocacy group for your situation can be found at: http://www.teach-nology.com/policymakers/parent_rights/ This page provides a number of sites that can assist you. Good luck! ============================================================= 10. "Our Latest Idea That Worked!" By: Don Louis, 5th Grade Teacher: St. Anisette Canada "Early Driving Skills!" "Give your students the gift of time to learn this basic driving skill, early! As students approach any corner, while walking through a hallway, instruct them to always follow these three simple steps! 1.) Stop 2.) Look left, right, and left again. 3.) If it is clear to go, continue walking. If not, wait until clear, and then continue. The students love the idea they are learning a grown up driving skill in elementary school!" ------------------------------------------------------------- **To Submit An Idea That Worked For You, Click Below: http://www.teach-nology.com/ideas/tell_us/ ============================================================= Please take the time to visit our sponsors, this newsletter would not be possible without their support. ============================================================= Teachnology, Inc. makes no warranties, either expressed or implied, about the truth or accuracy of the content of the TeAch-nology.com newsletter. ============================================================= If you are interested in sponsoring this newsletter place your order online at: http://www.teach-nology.com/advertising/ ============================================================= © 2000 Teachnology, Inc.
