Site of the week- Fun Bets- http://www.funbets.com/cgi-bin/start.cgi/betexchange/welcome.html?affiliateid=3180 Fun Bets has made a big hit with our users. In fact, one of our users actually won $624.00 U.S. last month. Fun Bets is an on-line game that allows you to place ficitional bets on real events. It works just like the stock market, you buy shares in an event and then try to sell the shares higher than what you purchased. They start you off with 1,000,000 FunBetBucks. You place bets and try to increase the value of your portfolio. At the end of the month, they award cash prizes based on how well you did. All users share a $10,000 pot each month. Best thing, you will never have to pay any real money to play this game! We have received contact from a number of teachers who use the stock market portion of funbets with their class. One 10th Grade Social Studies writes "I've been teaching kids the stock market for 20 years, they never get the principle of shorting. Maybe one student truely understands it after a month. But as soon as you start trying to short shares on the pop group N'Sync and try to make actual money, they all get it." You can buy and sell shares on the outcomes of the following types of events: Sports, Business, Politics, Entertainment, and even trials. ============================================================= 2. Jokes You Can Tell In Class- "Team Photos" Hanging in the hallway at the High School are the basketball team pictures from the past 40 years. A player in the center of the front row in each picture holds a basketball identifying the year -- "62-63," "63-64," "64-65," etc. One day I spotted a freshman looking curiously at the photos. Turning to me, he said, "Isn't it strange how the teams always lost by one point?" ------------------------------------------------------------- Want More Free Jokes & Humor? As Our Experts- ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "What is fredrick douglass famous for?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "Frederick Douglass was one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement, which fought to end slavery within the United States in the decades prior to the Civil War. A brilliant speaker, Douglass was asked by the American Anti-Slavery Society to engage in a tour of lectures, and so became recognized as one of America's first great black speakers. He won world fame when his autobiography was publicized in 1845. Two years later he bagan publishing an antislavery paper called the North Star. Douglass served as an adviser to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and fought for the adoption of constitutional amendments that guaranteed voting rights and other civil liberties for blacks. Douglass provided a powerful voice for human rights during this period of American history and is still revered today for his contributions against racial injustice." This was copied directly from the following web site that offers more information on Frederick Douglass: http://www.history.rochester.edu/class/douglass/home.html ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "Can you suggest a site for making word search puzzles?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: Probably the best we have seen thus far is Edhelper's Word Find Maker. Look for TeAch-nology.com's Word Search Maker to be released in the coming months. It's currently under development, but not ready to be used until we work all of the bugs out of it. Edhelper's Word Find Maker is a little hard to use. Make sure you double check it because some of our users report it can make errors. As of right now, it's probably the best the web has to offer. You can find it at: http://www.edhelper.com/wordfind.htm ************************************************************* A question from Kennie: "Can you help me find information about old newgate prison reform... i have 2 weeks and I can't find anything it is awful...plz help me" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: There are a number of resources related to this topic. Just go to: http://www.teach-nology.com/mega_search/ and type in "old newgate prison reform." This will take you to a page that lists many resources. Good luck. ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "I am doing a science fair project about citrus fruit juice and the acid reaction it has when a nail is left in it.. I don't understand how this acid reaction works, can someone explain it so I can understand it?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: In order to answer this question, we need to know exactly what type of acid and type of metal you are using. We're sure you're under time constraints, so e-mail us directly at: experts@teach-nology.com and we'll answer your questions directly. ************************************************************* A question from Kevin: "I am looking for a PhD or EdD program that would be within commuting range from the Hudson Valley. I am particularly interested in teaching strategies and teacher effectiveness. I have contacted the Universities of Columbia, NYU, Fordham, and St. John's. They will be sending me their general information. My goals are to eventually use the knowledge in the area of educational consulting and, perhaps, a part-time position at a private University/College. I have been teaching HS Biology for 27 years and am close to retirement/career change (5 1/2 years away). As I have a young family (a 9yr old and 2 1/2 yr old) I would like to do this as efficiently as possible with the least amount of financial errors toward my final decision. I know the decision of going for such a degree is correct. It's just a matter of finding the program that will also further my pursuits of making teachers more effective in the classroom as well as finding what will help our future children and leaders. Thank you for any help you are able to offer." ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "The universities that you mention have well established and reputable doctoral programs in education. It is difficult to advise you in deciding what would be best for your circumstances. However, in the process of making your decision, you should carefully read all the literature that each university sends and examine what each program offers, i.e., required course work, faculty teaching in any of the programs, time lines, etc. You can also do a literature search and find any publications that are associated with any given faculty that teach at the universities you are exploring. Your search should center on teacher effectiveness and I am sure you will come up with some names that are listed in the catalogues that you will be receiving. Of course, another variable is travel and the convenience of finding a program that is the closest in travel distance. Many colleges and universities now offer on-line courses as distance education. All in all, you should investigate all your possibilities. Good luck." ============================================================= 9. WIN prizes by entering the Poetry Contest!!! By: Kim L., High School Language Arts: Hackensack, NJ "Creating Photo Essays" "Photo essays are a special type of writing; they tell stories with a group of photographs that are connected to a theme. One activity using photo essays as a type of writing includes having students pick a topic (in any content area) that they would like to "write" about. Tell them that they have to collect photographs or pictures that represent the topic. Once they have their collections and you gave them a chance to discuss the relevance of the photos to the topic, ask them to arrange the photos in such a way (sequentially, etc.) that tell a story or relay the message related to the topic they chose. Students love to express their thoughts about topics using this medium. If you have technology to complete this activity, you can have students cut and paste their story using photos or images that they find on the Internet. This is a great activity for group work." ------------------------------------------------------------- Click Below, To Visit Our "Ideas That Worked!"
