Site of the week- teachwithmovies.org - http://www.teachwithmovies.org/ teachwithmovies.org is a very unique web site that provides learning guides to over 215 recommended film. The learning guides describe the benefits of the movie, possible problems, and helpful background. Discussion questions, bridges to reading, projects and links to the internet are also provided. Learning guides to films relevant to class assignments can be copied and sent home with a recommendation that parents watch and discuss the movies with their children. Students can then be asked to critique a film or discuss the themes it presents using the questions listed in the Guide. A movie can also be shown in class as an alternative teaching tool. The Guide can supplement textbooks and classroom materials. Examples of Guides that are especially suitable for use in school are: Inherit the Wind; Hamlet; Romeo & Juliet; Glory; Spartacus; Beautiful Dreamers (a film about Walt Whitman); The Crucible; A Christmas Carol; Gandhi and Judgment At Nuremberg. The staff at teachwithmovies.org also provides a seemingly endless list of movies that have little or no educational value. "In most families, children will watch many movies that have no educational content or which are objectionable for one reason or another. And, in fact, a child's life should not be all education and school work, nor should a child be restricted to a relentless diet of "beneficial films." ============================================================= 2. Jokes you can tell in your class- "Getting Forgetful" The man looked a little worried when the doctor came in to administer his annual physical, so the first thing the doctor did was to ask whether anything was troubling him. "Well, to tell the truth, Doc, yes," answered the patient. "You see, I seem to be getting forgetful. No, it's actually worse than that. I'm never sure I can remember where I put the car, or whether I answered a letter, or where I'm going, or what it is I'm going to do once I get there -- if I get there. So, I really need your help. What can I do?" The doctor mused for a moment, then answered in his kindest tones, "Pay me in advance." ------------------------------------------------------------- Want More Free Jokes & Humor? Ask An Educational Expert- ************************************************************* A question from Anonymous: "Considering that block scheduling limits the number of courses students can take and that many faculty members are not in favor of block scheduling, please explain the benefits students have derived from block scheduling at the senior high school?" ************************************************************* TeAch-nology.com's Staff Response: "Benefits that students derive from block scheduling include improved attendance and more planned activities for students to work on skills and concepts that sometime require more time on task. Students are more reluctant to be absent from school because that would mean making up a lot of missed work. Other benefits include the ability for teachers to have more time to work with students individually if needed. If teachers use differentiated instruction in a block, students can benefit from the various teaching strategies that are used, thus meeting the needs of students who learn in different ways other than from traditional methods of instruction." By: Harry Longerman 4th Grade Teacher, Brooklyn, New York "Math Mania" "Use your bulletin board for posting results to any survey that you can conduct with your students on any given topic. This can change each week. You can keep the results of the survey by using a frequency distribution and then calculating the results with the entire class at the end of the week. This can sharpen math skills and keep students interested on the results as they are posted. Results can be posted as charts, bar graphs, or qualitative measures. I used this with the past election and it worked great. It kept students interested and reinforced math concepts as well." ------------------------------------------------------------- Click Below, To Visit Our "Ideas That Worked!"
