Site of the week- AuctionWatch.com- http://www.auctionwatch.com/ Based on the mass amount of e-mails our experts have received on the topic of online auctions, we thought we would share AuctionWatch.com with you this week. AuctionWatch.com originated in July 1998 as a message board on the home page of co-founder and avid auction enthusiast Mark Dodd. An experienced collector himself, Dodd felt that auction users would benefit from a central Internet destination where they could discuss their experiences and learn from each other. Although many auction sites encouraged user communication, Dodd was frustrated by their failure to provide a well-organized, unbiased discussion forum for their members. Within a few months, Dodd's message board had grown into a movement with great potential, attracting thousands of online auction users who shared their experiences and looked to the site for guidance. At this point, Dodd teamed up with Rodrigo Sales, a fellow auction enthusiast and graduate of Stanford Business School. In January 1999, they incorporated AuctionWatch.com with the mission of providing information and services to help people use online auctions intelligently and efficiently. Today, AuctionWatch.com not only allows you to search over 300 auction sites at once, but they also let you manager your bids at one site. It's not an auction site, rather an auction community. This site allows you to ask other users their opinions on your bids and if you're really lost you can always get a free appraisal at the appraisal center. ============================================================= 2. Jokes you can tell in your class- "The Tooth Fairy" While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my four-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, "The tooth fairy will never believe this!" ------------------------------------------------------------- Want More Free Jokes & Humor? Ask The Experts- Ask The Technology Experts: <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from anonymous: "Is it possible to create an interactive web with Netscape and then use it on a computer whose browser is Internet Explorer?" TeAch-nology.com's Response: "We assume that you're referring to developing web pages with Netscape Composer, the web editing component of the Netscape Communicator package. Composer is a neat little tool for creating simple web pages. Cross-browser compatibility is an issue in web development that has been plaguing web designers since the dawn of the Internet. The latest version of Netscape Composer does a good job of accommodating most of the latest browsers including Netscape and Internet Explorer. The simple answer is yes, Netscape Composer will help you create web pages that work in recent versions of Internet Explorer. In our staffs cumulative experience, Composer will create full functional web pages for Internet Explorer version 4.0 and up. We do notice a slight problem when using tables created in Netscape Composer. It seems that if you set a table within a table or set an alignment (i.e. right, center, left) within a table, those tables do not appear the same way in Internet Explorer. For most simple web pages, this will not pose a problem. But if you are creating a intricate graphical layout, this may cause a major problem. Remember to consider your audience. If they primarily use Netscape, then develop your pages accordingly. Of TeAch-nology.com's 56,000+ users, 93% use Internet Explorer. As a result, we develop our site with that in mind. If you want to check the compatibility of a web page or your entire web site for that matter, Web Trends offers a great free tool for testing browser compatibility. It will tell you how it appears in all types of browsers. You can find it at: http://www.webtrends.net/tools/mechanic/browser.htm Good Luck!!" ************************************************************* To ask the TeAch-nology.com staff a technology question go to: http://www.teach-nology.com/help/ask_a_tech_expert/ ************************************************************* ============================================================= 8. "Our Newest Idea That Worked!" By: Lisa Correia, 4th Grade Teacher: Croton-on Huduson, NY Building Decision Making Skills "Developing the concept of "change" and getting students to accept what can be changed and what cannot be changed can sometimes be a challenge for teachers. This exercise gets students to use thinking and reasoning skills to make decisions on what they have control over and what they do not and to know the difference between the two. Start out with a list of various phrases describing situations such as: the temperature outside, how old you are, how you treat other people, how well you do in school, etc. Ask students to identify what can be changed and what cannot; ask them to tell why, and why not. This can be done in small groups or as a partner activity. As a follow-up, students can write their own list and share it with others. For younger students, the teacher can read the list and the children can indicate the differences with a raise of the hand." ------------------------------------------------------------- Click Below, To Visit Our "Ideas That Worked!"
