Ask An Educational Expert- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from Anonymous: "I am currently a teacher training student and have recently began a school placement. I have a class of 27 all of which are of extremely low ability for a year 2 class, there is also a small number of pupils who suffer from ADHD, one or two are on ritalin which has improved their behaviour, do you have any ideas how i could manage and teach the class effectively while keeping the ADHDers interested and on task?, i would be grateful for any suggestions on how to deal with and teach ADHD sufferers.Any response would be much appreciated." <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> TeAch-nology.com's response: Working with children who are ADD/ADHD is quite a challenge in teaching today...more and more, we are hearing from teachers who are confronted with students who are suffer from this syndrome and who are on medication. There are many ways to deal with ADD students. However, the first thing to keep in mind is that each student has different needs and as a result, you have to adjust your teaching strategy to meet those individual needs of each student. But, as long as you are well plannned and have tasks for students to complete that keeps them focused and product driven, you should be able to manage the students with ADD/ADHD in a more effective way. In knowing the capability of those students, you can design tasks that are short in duration and lead to addtional tasks for the students to them keep focused. It's like conducting an orchestra and leading everyone to complete different tasks but ultimately going in the same direction (on the same page). Grouping students in small groups also helps focus ADD/ADHD students and keeps them responsible. Ask A Technology Expert- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from Anonymous: "We have purchased a digital video camera Canon MV20i and need to know how/what it needs to attach to a PC with Win98 on a WinNT Network in our primary school?" <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> TeAch-nology.com's response: To fully answer this, we would need to know a lot more about the particular network you would like to put this on. Let us break it down for you into the hardware and software aspects of your question. Software First, we must assume that you have all of the software that comes prepackaged with the camera. If you do not have this, you'll need to visit Canon site (www.usa.canon.com) and download this software. The Canon web site indicates that the software supports NT. Hardware This is the tricky part. If this computer has an up-to-date graphics card, your job is simple. The MV20i has the ability to export via an S-video connection. If this computer's graphics card has a s-video that you can plug directly into, you're in business. If your graphics card does not support S-video, you will need to get a compatible IEEE 1394 (4 pins) connector. This is assuming that you have the proper ports available on this computer. Now, if that computer has neither port, you can sometimes find an adapter that can convert s-video in and/or 4 pins connectors into a useable format for yourself. The best place to find these types of adapters is at a local computer show where multiple vendors are present and can assess your individual situation. Now, if that computer has neither port and you think that the above is too hard or time consuming, we would suggest just upgrading the video card to allow for S-video in. Good Luck! <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from Anonymous: "Now that I have upgraded Explorer and Outlook Express, every time I print from e-mail or the internet, the left margin is cut off. When I print from a Word or Works program, everything is fine. Since it is not possible to set margins for e-mail or the internet, I don't know what to do. Help!" <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> TeAch-nology.com's response: We feel your pain! Printing problems freak everybody out, especially when one program works, but others do not. The problem you're experiencing could be either a software problem or just a individual web pages/e-mail specific problem. Hopefully, it is just a web page/e-mail specific problem. In this case, the pages you are trying to print out are just not optimized for printing a great number of web sites that were designed by novices. To test this, we would suggest going to our tutorial section: http://www.teach-nology.com/tutorials/ Click on any tutorial and then click on the printer friendly version of that tutorial. Just print the first page. If it works, your problem is that you are trying to print out web pages that are not optimized for printing. The latest statistic is that over 53% of all English-based web pages are not optimized for printing. Now if that doesn't work, there may be a problem when the software was installed. At that point, we would suggest two things: 1. Contact Microsoft Technical support via an e-mail. Sometimes their newest versions have some bugs they can work you around. You can find their technical support e-mail address at: http://support.microsoft.com/directory/ 2. Uninstall and re-install Internet Explorer. If you downloaded it off the Internet the intitial time you installed it, we would recommend you download it from a different location. Sometimes an incomplete copy is posted on some servers, or Internet traffic can some times cut you off when downloading. If it was an installation mistake, this may help. We hope this helps...Good Luck! <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ************************************************************* To ask the TeAch-nology.com staff a technology question go to: http://www.teach-nology.com/help/ask_a_tech_expert/ ************************************************************* ============================================================= 9.
