Jokes you can tell in class- A customer was continually bothering the waiter in a restaurant; first, he'd asked that the air conditioning be turned up because he was too hot, then he asked it be turned down cause he was too cold, and so on for about half an hour. Surprisingly, the waiter was very patient, walking back and forth and never once getting angry. So finally, a second customer asked why didn't they just throw out the pest. "Oh I don't care." said the waiter with a smile. "We don't even have an air conditioner." ------------------------------------------------------------- Want More Free Jokes & Humor? Ask A Technology Expert- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from Anonymous: "I wish to purchase the type of device that scans negatives and turns them into floppy discs...to send photos by email. We saw one but did not realize that we needed it..now do not know what it is called or even who makes such a device. We are using a Nikon model Lite Touch Zoom 80 (NikonZoomLens38-80mm macro) with 35mm film. Maybe we should just go for a digital camera, but maybe this device would be what we need." <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> TeAch-nology.com's Response: The piece of hardware you are describing is termed a "film scanner." If you can't decide which input device to purchase (digital camera vs. a film scanner), let us offer some advice on both. Film scanners will give you ultra quality pictures, digital cameras on the other hand can produce the same quality. But, it will cost you a great deal more on the average. We need to look into the word quality a little; quality is great, but it dramatically increases file size. If you were to take an ultra quality picture, the file made as a result of that picture would be anywhere from 300K to 1 megabyte in size. This is okay if you're looking at them from a CD-rom. But if you send them via email, most people will not be able to accept them because a great deal of accounts don't accept any files over 250K. If you're using a 1.4 MB floppy disk, you would fill it with just four pictures. If you're planning to send your pictures over the Internet, we advise you to go with a nice digital camera. While on the word quality, let us also mention that quality on a computer does not always amount to quality on a printed page. You can only print out at the best resolution your printer can handle. You'll notice when looking to purchase a scanner, digital camera, and/or print the letters, DPI (dots per inch) is what everyone uses to indicate quality. The more dots of color you have in an inch, the sharper the resolution. Let's say you purchase that film scanner and it's a 1200 DPI model, you'll have a print with a DPI rating of 600. At best you will only be able to print at half the quality of your scanner. If printing is a major factor, we would advise you to go with a digital camera or film scanner that match the DPI rating of your printer. You may want to purchase a digital camera for pure convenience. Sony's Mativca series allows you to take pictures directly to a disk. A film scanner may require additional time to develop such photos. Other models of cameras will require the same amount of time as using a film scanner to develop. As far as which model to go with, we would advise you to check the professional arbitrary hardware review site CNET (www.cnet.com). CNET provides thorough reviews and allows you to see what other people are thinking about in what they have purchased.
