Ask A Technology Expert- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from Rae: "I am a first year art teacher for grades K-8. I have been searching for a good elementary internet site for the students to use in the computer lab on art history. I want them to search artists from the following periods: renaissance, impressionism and realism. Do you have any suggestions? I am about at my wits end!" TeAch-nology.com's Response: We have a section on our site for both teachers (you) and students in all subjects. In this section you will be able to find sites that we have reviewed that cover a wide range of topics, we also point out interactive sites that are safe for students to explore and use. By accessing this part of our site: http://www.teach-nology.com/teachers/subject_matter/ Just choose your subject. In your case "Arts & Humanities" would be the choice. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from Lynn Gay: "I want to know how to get or write a grant (I know nothing about grant writing in the first place) that will get us presentation hardware and software -- the stuff required to hook my Imac up to the TV monitor so the whole class can benefit from the computer at the same time. Any answers or direction will be appreciated. I'm told the "stuff" we need will cost approx. $80.00 per classroom. I'd like to get it for the entire 4th/5th grade. Thanks for your help." TeAch-nology.com's Response: Lynn before you go spending any money, make sure to check your iMac out first. Most models come standard with S-video out. This would allow you to plug into your T.V. as long as you can find the right cables. Newer TV models have this interface; if it's an older TV you can just go to an Appliance store and purchase the cables. This is your first item of business. This would save from purchasing a VGA-to-TV converter, which run from $75 to $250 depending on the picture quality. The software you would need would be Presentation software of some kind. We would recommend MS PowerPoint. If that's not available, Corel Presentations and/or Hyperstudio are alternatives. Presentation software will run about $25-100 depending on which you go with. If your looking for a grant to fund this endeavor, you may want to take a look at 30 grant-oriented sites that we have reviewed at: http://www.teach-nology.com/edleadership/funding_for_schools/grant_writing/ You can expect to see a tutorial on Grant Writing Basics on our site in the near future to help you as well. Good Luck! <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from Susan Lahti: "Help - by the time I got my tech expert to my computer to do the download of the scheduling program, it was gone. We aren't allowed to download to our school computers on our own. Is there some way to still access that program. I think it was running the 1st week of Sept. Thanks" TeAch-nology.com's Response: Here two scheduling programs that you'll love. The new version were just released. They far surpass the abilities of Schedule Mate (The program you discussed). You can download them for free from the publishers web site. They both have free licenses. Newsletter subscribers get the inside scoop. We will be featuring these programs in the coming weeks. Assignment Organizer- http://happytripperproductions.freeservers.com/ A program for students for scheduling and organizing Assignments. Helps you keep track of assignment deadlines by informing you of the number of days left before the deadline, and can optionally alert you to assignments that are impending within a specified number of days. Also allows you to specify a file for the assignment (e.g. a Word document) which can then be opened directly from within Assignment Organizer. Suitable for school/college/uni students. Calendar Maker- http://pantheon.yale.edu/~bdc5/calmaker/index.html Calendar Maker is a program you can use to create personalized calendars primarily for family use. It uses intuitive dialogs that guide you through the process of adding, deleting, changing, and viewing calendar entries. Once your additions and modifications are complete, you can view the calendar onscreen or choose to print it. This updated version features many more customizable options, especially for printing, import/export features, a sample file of U.S. holidays, and more. It also comes with two companion programs that are designed to generate many similar events with ease. ************************************************************* To ask the TeAch-nology.com staff a technology question go to: http://www.teach-nology.com/help/ask_a_tech_expert/ ************************************************************* ============================================================= 8. Tip of the Week Survey your students and find out how many of them have computers with on-line service. In your survey, also ask them how much time they spend on-line and what sites they visit. If you find that some students do not have computer access at home, then inquire whether the local library has Internet access and the hours that it is available.
