Teaching with Technology Site of the week- PlanetFeedback Want to use technology in your first week of school? Ask your students what good and bad experiences they had this summer. Then go to this site and see who they should thank or complain to. You've just had a terrible flight -- or gotten great service from an e-commerce site. You want to tell someone about it, someone at that company who can do something about it. But you don't have time to draft a letter and find out who to send it to. That's where PlanetFeedback comes in. They make it easy to write and send feedback letters to companies. They help you after the letter is sent, too, by tracking responses and following up. And they increase your influence by letting you send copies of your letters to others. Ask A Technology Expert- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from S.C. Y. Finney: "I have currently been hired to teach computer/technology at a parochial elementary K-8 school. I have no software to speak of and am at a loss. My main question, however, is where can I find interactive computer/techonology software for k-8. Everything that I have found is geared towards a specific subject. This software is available for secondary and older adults, but I have not found any for younger students. Can you direct me as to where or who I need to speak with? Thank you SO much!" TeAch-nology.com's Response: It's funny we should get a question like this today, we just reviewed a web site that sounds like it would be right up your alley: Review Corner- http://www.reviewcorner.com/reviews.html This site reviews all types of software sorted by age. This site also helps you locate the software. It's very helpful, give it a try. The other problem you're having locating K-8 general software is not as simple as it seems. It seems that software companies feel as if you must buy a $200 piece of software for every unit you do. A classroom teacher could spend their entire yearly salary just to have one software application per unit plan. This is a systemic problem in the software industry. Our best advice is to use your professional judgement when choosing software. Only buy programs that you can adapt to multiple areas of your teaching. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from Claire a PE teacher from San Jose, Ca.: "Do you have any information on Literacy and Physical Education." TeAch-nology.com's Response: Are you looking specifically for literacy as it would be incorporated into physical education? If so, we can refer you to: PE Central- http://pe.central.vt.edu/ The Southern Oregon University- http://www.sou.edu/library/instruct/health/ Good luck. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> A question from anonymous: "During the summer, I used my computer on a university campus and the tech staff configured my computer for ethernet access. I was unable to locate the staff before I left. I am home and would like my dialup access to work again. What steps must I follow to reconfigure my dialup networking?" TeAch-nology.com's Response: Sorry, most university campuses use proprietary Ethernet hardware and software. In most cases, in order to disable the software a password must be supplied. This is used as an anti-theft device. If you do know the password, you could locate the software and gain administrator access with it. Once you gain administrator access, you would just have to uninstall or remove the Ethernet software and you should be able to install your dial-up networking. It's unlikely that your Ethernet card is not password protected, but if no password is required you would just have to uninstall or remove the Ethernet software. Once you do, you can simply reconfigure dial-up networking (assuming your running Windows 95+) by assessing it through the: Start > Programs > Accessories > Communication Menus. ************************************************************* To ask the TeAch-nology.com staff a technology question go to: http://www.teach-nology.com/help/ask_a_tech_expert/ ************************************************************* ============================================================= 8. Teaching Tip of the week- Be a guide on the side, not a sage on the stage! Provide opportunities for your students to master the knowledge needed to succeed and encourage the life long skills required to lead productive lives. Use a variety of ways to engage your students in activities that make sense to them. Motivate them to want to learn more about the information that you are presenting or expecting them to learn. Model learning in an enthusiastic way and find the joy in learning new things as you lead your students through a journey of discovery. ============================================================= 10.
