Lesson Plan : Core Environmental Factors

Teacher Name:
 MRS. KING-ESPINOZA
Grade:
 Grade 2
Subject:
 Science

Topic:
 EARTH, AIR, WATER, FIRE
Content:
(OBSERVING EARTH PART 1 OF 4) CORE MANTLE CRUST SOILS EARTHQUAKES VOLCANOES POLLUTION LANDFORMS (OBSERVING AIR PART 2 OF 4) AIR GAS OXYGEN NITROGEN CARBON DIOXIDE THERMOMETER WATER VAPOR POLLUTION FORCE SENSES
Goals:
to introduce students to the basic properties of earth, air, water, fire - to show how we use and come in contact with the four elements in our daily lives - bebeficial aspects (resources) - to alert students to certain dangers posed by these elements - to make students aware the theat pollution poses to our environment and what can be done to change (conservation)
Objectives:
SWBAT discover the earth is a home for living things - describe the components of the earth and purpose - compare the 3 layers of the earth and explain purpose - discuss, debate, and analyze the dangers of pollution SWBAT to define air - compare relationship of air and weather (force) - analyze the need for air and uses for air - discuss, debate, and analyze the harmful affects of air pollution
Materials:
SVE instructional materials primer multimedia pack - filmstrip, audio, experiments, activities, worksheets. Science and SS text and workbooks - STC and FOSS material kits fro experiments
Introduction:
Use the globe and ask, "What do you see and think of when I show you this model of the earth?" Record on a web on board and go into our unit of elements using what the students have brainstormed.
Development:
actual experiments simulating the concepts of each element. 1 to 2 experiments for every part of the unit. read alouds and book sets going more into depth volcanoes, rocks, resources, ladnforms etc. I will model, demonstrate and explain all concepts while teaching the students to analyze and test and prove certain aspects of each element.
Practice:
unit worksheets in packet form will be distributed after demonstrations.
Accommodations:
See modifications chart attached to lesson plan
Checking For Understanding:
SWBAT complete KWL chart fro every element and class will contribute to the whole
Closure:
Earth Day celebration on 22nd - hopefully we are finished with the unit and can begin formal testing the following week.
Evaluation:
80% or better average on each element of unit
