Goals:
 Students will use the taught pre-writing startegy of gathering details and events to organize their their writing. Students will begin to prewrite a paragraph of a Character Sketch and use a graphic organizer, Sample Student Character Sketch, Zanber-Bloser Charcter Sketch Rubric, and Class Generated Word Box as guides. Standards: Writing Applications: 2.2 Write a response to Literature; a. Demonstrate an understanding of the literary work. b.Support judgements through references to both the text and prior knowledge. Literay Response and Analysis: 3.3 Use knowledge of of the situation and setting and of a characger's trits and motivations to determine the causes for that character's actions Listening and Speaking: 1.1 Ask thoughful questions and respond to reevant questions with appropriate elaboration in oral settings.
Objectives:
  1.A list of events and detials will be generated from student responses and a universal character trait will be given for each action/ detial. 2. Students will be able to draw conclusions about a character's traits and provide evidence for the trait. 2. Students will organize their conclusions and evidence about a their chosen character from Esperanza Rising into a graphic organizer as a strategy to begin pre-writing a paragraph of their Character Sketch. 3. Students will have a word box of character traits to begin writing their character sketch. 2.Students will use a rubric to guide and assess their writing.
Materials:
 Copies of Esperanza Rising Book Graphic Organizer Overhead Projecter A Blank "Words to Describe a Character Word Box" for students Chart Paper Markers Paper and Pencil
Introduction:
 State Focus: Today we will begin writing our second paragraph to our Character Sketch and exploring Character Traits. Review past lessons. Remind Students of Johnny Appleseed and the conclusions we drew about him. Refer to students to the chart we created last week. Point out adjectives/characteristics used to describe Johnny. What is a Character Trait? (refer to defintion on chart paper) Point out adjectives on Johnny Appleseed Chart Begin a "Words to Describe A Character Word Box" on Chart paper. Adding Johnny's traits to word box. Refer to Student Essay written on Chart Paper (Character Sketch)Focusing on 3rd paragraph, circling character triats. Review Rubric and have class grade student essay. Add student samples to word box. Introduce Universal Character Traits Add to word box.(Students will be encouraged to use these in their writing) Personal Courage Caring for Others Peserverance resourcefulness a belief in oneself optimism Relate to Experanza: These are universal character traits. Today we will be seeing whether we can use any of these traits in our writing. We wil be using the strategy of jotting down details from the book and using a graphic organizer to continue writing our character sketch.
Development:
 Relate character traits to theme Review Themes of Esperanza Rising: Starting Over Overcoming Adversity Accepting Those who are different A students will be asked to remember details about a charcter from Esperanza Rising and write them on a paper. As a class we will explore the character events and detials and see how the universal traits are revealed.
Practice:
 How can we make sentences out of our Character Traits Map to guide our writing? Guide students through the process. We will brianstorm on ways to begin our paragraphs by looking at Student Character Sketch as example.
Accommodations:
 Creation of word box for paragraph writing that includes generic character traits like friendly, sad, happy, angry..etc. Quick review of Adjectives if necessary. In filling out the graphic organizer, Students will be allowed to work with partners who are anaylizing the same character as them.
Checking For Understanding:
 Student questions, comments, and answers. One on One writing conferences. Final Paper will be graded using the established Rubric for a Character Sketch by Zaner-Bloser
Closure:
 Ongoing Lesson... tomorrow we will revist our paragraphs and use rubric to assess student work samples. Focus..Are we allowing our reader to imagine and get to know the character by using specic details and descriptive words? Do our sentences make sence? Are we capitalizing and using correct punctuation?
