Goals:
 Students will discuss the storyline in depth. Students will come to understand Heter Prnne's character and motivations better through a discussion and comparison session.
Objectives:
 Students will know, understand and be able to: what has happened in the story. the evidence for Hester's "crime." Hester's situation and emotions. deduce what will generally happen in the story. discuss the theme and contents of the chapters covered.
Materials:
 Whiteboard or Computer with projector
Introduction:
 Journaling Topic: "Don't judge a book by it's cover." Students will journal for 10-15 minutes.
Development:
 Ask students to share their journal entries. Guiding questions: How does that make you feel? That's a great example, pick card of student call name, how does that make you feel? Before we move on into the discussion portion of today. I would like to remind you that in an effective discussion only one person is talking at once. So I would ask you to raise your hand when you have something to say and only talk when you have the floor. (Maybe use the flower of power, if things get really out of hand).
Practice:
 I'd like to same more time to discuss how this pertains to The Scarlet Letter. First I'd like a volunteer to type up our notes from this discussion. If no one volunteers choose a card. What do we know about the plot so far? Who are the main characters? (have note taker type each characters name on a separate line) Pick a student's card go through each character asking a different students What do we know about ________? What do you think the theme of this story is? Theme is the recurring topic, motif, etc.

 After the discussion provide each student with a copy of discussion notes. Have each student write a prediction for the story to put in the prediction box.
Closure:
