Goals:
 The Odyssey: *Students will read the excerpts assigned from The Odyssey. *Students will comprehend the language in The Odyssey. *Students will understand the content of The Odyssey. *Students will learn about Greek mythology. *Students will research one Greek God or Goddess of their choice. Three Point Paragraph: *Students will learn the structure of a three point paragraph. *Students will learn the content of a three point paragraph. *Students will incorporate information from The Odyssey into their three point paragraphs. *Students will have multiple opportunities to practice writing a three point paragraph. *Students will create a three point paragraph in small groups in class. *Students will present their three point paragraphs in small groups to the class.
Objectives:
 The Odyssey: *To monitor reading and comprehension, weekly quizes will be administered with questions relating directly to the assigned text. *To ensure that the text is being read and to cater to a variety of learning styles, the students will have the opportunity to listen to a 'book on tape' version of The Odyssey while they follow along in their own text books in class. *To assist the students in the understanding of the content of The Odyssey, they will complete various exercises in their textbook workbooks as homework: 1) Writing margin notes in the spaces provided 2) Completing the "Heroic versus Human Traits of Odysseus" chart 3) Completing the "Prediction Table" chart (where the students extract quotes from the text to make predictions and inferences) 4)Creating a 6x6 chart where they list a different given component of the reading they are assigned. 5) Illustrating particular aspects of the setting 6) Illustrating particular monsters that are hard to invision 7) Writing a letter to Odysseus' wife, Penelope from Odysseus' perspective *Students will learn about Greek mythology by reviewing a summary of all of the Greek Gods and Goddesses in class, and choosing the top three that they are interested in researching. They will then be assigned one of the three Gods/ Goddesses they have chosen to further research. They will be given informational readers on Greek mythology to do their research, in addition to a "reading for meaning" guide sheet. The result of this will be an informational brochure on the God/ Goddess of thier choice that contains information on three foci. *To help students learn the structure of a three point paragraph, they will make in-class foldables. The foldables will have a title, a colored cover, four tabs for facts, and two tabs per every fact tab for support. The content of the foldables will be the classroom rewards and consequences. *To teach students the appropriate content of a three point paragraph and to synthesize their background knowledge on the subject, they will create, together with the teacher, and in-class bubble cluster that addresses the content/ elements of a three point paragraph. This will be done on a large piece of bucher paper with colored markers. *To help combine the aquired knowledge of content and structure of a three point paragraph, students will fill out a graphic organizer worksheet that uses shapes next to the fill-in-the-blank lines to illustrate the content and structure of the paragraph. The topic of these paragraphs will be "heroes", which ties in with the introduction to The Odyssey. Before beginning their hero paragraphs, the students will have an opportunity to do in class journal writing on the topic of heroes. * Students will polish their three point paragraphs by adding imagery, emotion, and detai to them to help flesh them out. *Students will use the finished three point hero paragraphs to create a hero poster. Their paragraphs will be affixed to the posters, and will serve as the basis for the theme of the posters. *Students will create a three point paragraph on a large piece of lined butcher paper using thier foldables, and following the form they learn on the three point paragraph graphic organizer worksheet. *Students will present these butcher paper paragraphs to the class. ?

Introduction:
 Students will be introduced to The Odyssey by first thinking about heroes. This will start through an in-class discussion on what it means to be a hero and examples of some real-life heroes. Students will then be given an alloted number of minutes in class to write in their journals about who their hero is or what a hero is to them.
