Goals:
 Read, discuss, and write about the novel.
Objectives:
 Students will achieve 80% or higher on the vocab. words and definitions. Students will be able to pick out the different literary forms with 80% accuracy. Students will read Ch.1&2 orally in class and take notes.
Materials:
 "The Pearl" Vocab.worksheets Overhead sheets W/ vocab. Sheets on Literary terms
Introduction:
 Ask students if they have ever heard of John Steinbeck. Discuss "Of Mice and Men". Remind students of Steinbeck's life and why he wrote about the things he did. Ask if any one has read "The Pearl".
Development:
 Put Literary terms on the board. Students will copy them into their notes. Focus on novella, prose, realism,style,tone,foreshadowing, irony, symbol. List the characters on the board. Make sure everyone can pronounce the names. Kino, Juana, Coyotito, Juan Tomas, Apolonia, The Doctor.
Practice:
 Students will write the definitions of ten of the vocab. words. The students will write the definitions of the Literary Terms

 Orally answer questions about content of chapter 1.
Closure:
 See if students can identify any of the literary elements that have occurred so far.
