Teacher Name:

Grade:
 Grade 9-10
Subject:
 Language Arts

Topic:
 Grammar
Content:
 Varying sentence types
Goals:
Goal 6: The learner will apply conventions of grammar and language usage.
Objectives:
OBJECTIVE 6.01 Demonstrate an understanding of conventional written and spoken expression that uses varying sentence types (e.g., simple, compound, complex, compound-complex) purposefully, correctly, and for specific effect.
Materials:
_Farewell to Manzanar_ text, grammar notes
Introduction:
 Review various sentence types
Development:
Show a paragraph that uses all four types of sentences and one that uses only simple sentences. Explain that variying sentence structure makes reading more intersting. Using only one type of structure makes reading monotonous.
Practice:
Students will use the memoir that they are reading _Farewell to Manzanar_ to find a paragraph that varies the sentence structure.
Accommodations:
Students who do not have an event to write about can respond to the current chapter of the text. If students are having a difficult time writing complex sentences, they can first write in simple sentences and then combine them.
Checking For Understanding:
Students will find a partner and switch papers. They must underline each type of sentence in a different color indicating both that the first student has completed the assignment correctly and that the 2nd student can identify the sentences.
Closure:
Have student pairs volunteer to share their sentences or ask questions.
Evaluation:
 Quiz on identifying sentence structures.
