Content:
English Language Arts: Vocabulary and Concept Development 1.2 Use word origins to determine meaning. Reading 1.4 Know common root and affixes derived from Greek and Latin. Spelling 1.5 Spell root, suffixes, prefixes, and syllable constructions correctly.
Goals:
The students will learn and be able to read words with suffixes and use the Phonics/Decoding strategy to determine the meaning of new vocabulary. The students will be able to identify and spell roots, suffixes, prefixes and syllable constructions correctly.
Objectives:
 - recognize when words have the suffixes -ly, -less, and -able - decode words with the suffixes, -ly, -less, and -able
Materials:
Newspaper, Highlighters, Pens, "In the News," worksheets, Dictionary/Thesaurus
Introduction:
The teacher will place three words on the board containing a common suffix. The teacher will ask the students what thee words have in common. Target response is that they all contain the same word ending "a suffix." The teacher will then the lesson goal and objective. The teacher will teach the suffixes -able, -less, and -ly and their meaning.
Development:
The teacher will place three columns on the board containing the target suffixes. The teacher will then ask students to generate a word containing each suffix and model how to decode its meaning.
Practice:
The students will be separated into groups to find words containing the suffixes in the newspaper. The students will highlight the words they find and record them on the "In the News" worksheet. The teacher will monitor each group for accuracy of word choices.
Accommodations:
The lesson instruction will be presented using a variety of modalities to meet the students individual learning styles (visuals, auditory instruction, and kinesthetic activities). The student will work in groups for peer group support. I review key concepts and vocabulary skills from previous lessons. Other adaptations made during the lesson include; slowing down the pace of instruction, checking for understanding ( whole group and while monitoring groups), previewing and reviewing lesson objectives, the use of instructional material and teacher monitoring.
Checking For Understanding:
During the lesson instruction I will check for understanding and monitor students learning by both formal and informal observations and questioning. I will check the students usage of suffixes in the math word problems for accuracy.
Closure:
The students will reflect on the learning and activity by demonstrating their knowledge of the target suffixes by using them accurately in sentences and decoding the meaning of words containing suffixes with the class.
Evaluation:
The lesson I planned worked well overall. The lessons goals and objectives were clear and engaging. Most students understood suffixes. Struggling students had trouble identifying base/root words and identified words containing the target suffix, but they were not utilized as suffixes (i.e. the "venerable").
Teacher Reflections:
I would teach this lesson again keeping in mind the energy of this age group. Many groups shared for longer periods of time taking away from the sharing time of other groups. So, in the future I will limit the amount of extend the amount of time for the activity and shorten the number of words that each group can share.
