Objectives:
The objective of this unit is for students to gain the strategy of finding answers in a text.Students will work in a group cooperatively and present questions generated from the text. Students will gain the confidence to work independently when presented with comprehension questions.
Materials:
Overhead projector. ELMO projector is used also.
Introduction:
QAR Strategy will be introduced. Explain to students that we will be focusing on "right there" answers. Tell students that often times the answers to questions after a passage are right there in the chapter. Tell students that we are going to find out how to find the "right there" answers in a text when asked.
Development:
Teacher will display a passage from read naturally on the ELMO projector. Every student will receive a copy of the passage. We will read the questions first, and circle key words from the questions. Teacher will read the passage as the students follow along, as a group we will find the key words in bold.
Practice:
After reading the passage teacher and students will find answers to questions by looking at the words in bold for clues as to where to find the answers. Teacher and students will find answers to cloze sentences.
Accommodations:
Text rewritten eliminating difficult word usage not needed for understanding. Questions simplified using when, who, and what and avoiding difficult vocabulary not needed for grade level. Larger Font-use of an overlay for student with scotopic sensitivity.
Checking For Understanding:
Whole class will share the answers to questions, teacher will ask the students "was the answer "right there"? Students will be placed into groups of four to create own questions from the text. Questions will be presented to the other groups to find.
Closure:
Teacher will discuss with students what they have learned, teacher will explain that usually the answers are "right there", there are no tricks!
Evaluation:
Good strategy for students, increases ability to answer comprehension questions, skills needed for testing, build self confidence. Good progress has been made, is a step by step process that cannot be rushed. Needs to start from the simple to difficult.
Teacher Reflections:
Students have been intimidated when presented with questions to answer after a reading. This strategy has taught them how to find answers. Most of my students have a difficult time in this area of reading comprehension. I found this to be a tool that needs to be taught, the students really enjoyed this lesson1
