Goals:
 Expectations: Reading 1. 1.1 � read a few different types of literary texts, graphic texts (signs) and informational texts. 2. 1.6 � extend understanding of texts by connecting the ideas in them to their own knowledge and experience, to other familiar texts and to the world around them. Media Literacy 3. 1.1 identify the purpose and intended audience of some simple media texts Mathematics 4. demonstrate the ability to organize objects into categories, by classifying 5. read primary data presented in concrete graphs, pictographs, etc.
Objectives:
 The students will be able to recognize Street Signs and Store Signs through pictures in the story and discussion in small and large groups.
Materials:
 Blackline Master 29 - 21 copies Collections Book - Early Level - "Finding Our Way" Pages 19 - 24. Chart Paper with the Headings Street Signs and Store Signs. Index cards with the words from the story and pictures to match if possible. 11 by 17 paper with the headings Street Signs and Store Signs - 5 copies. Markers, Masking tape Blank paper to glue the signs from the blackline master on. List of groups - (5 groups) - written on bottom of 11 by 17 paper.
Introduction:
 The students have been introduced to the story beforehand. Reread the story with the students. Ask them to focus on the pictures as the story is being read. SEVEN MINUTES
Development:
 Ask the students to identify the kinds of signs in the story (Street, Store). Have the students take a couple of seconds to scan through the text to find different signs. THREE MINUTES
Practice:
 As a large group, have students identify a sign from the book and whether it is a Street Sign or a Store Sign. The teacher can put it on the chart on the blackboard in the appropriate column. TEN MINUTES

Checking For Understanding:
 Use observations during large group activity. Make mental notes to jot down after class. While the class is working in small groups or individually, provide feedback.
Closure:
 Assign the sheet. Let the students know they have to cut out the Headings and classify each sign under the appropriate heading. Go over the signs first.
Evaluation:
 How did the students do on Blackline Master 29? Is the student able to classify on his/her own? *Level 4 - 10,11,12 right *Level 3 - 8,9, right *Level 2 - 6,7 right, *Level 1 - 0,1,2,3,4,5 right
