Lesson Plan : VOLCANOES GUIDED READING 1

Teacher Name:
 Sara Brown practicum
Grade:
 Grade 4
Subject:
 Interdisciplinary

Topic:
 Volcanoes across the curriculum.
Content:
Reading, Writing, Science, Vocabulary-all relating to the volcano theme (earth science.) Linking to prior knowledge/scaffolding approach.
Goals:
Students' will create volcano mini-books based upon new information given in text, and identify the cause/effect relationships (chain of events) addressing the following: What is a volcano? What causes a volcano to erupt?
Objectives:
E1c.2: Student reads and comprehends informational materials to develop understanding by relating new information to prior knowledge and experience. S7b: The student demonstrates a conceptual understanding of Earth materials, and changes in the Earth and the sky; that is, the student understands that some changes are due to slow processes (e.g.,erosion and weathering), and others are due to rapid processes (e.g., landslides, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions).
Materials:
"BOOM!" by Howard Gardner (level book) Mini-book worksheets Pre cut word strips for vocab. word wall Word Wall posterboard/portable word walls
Introduction:
Introduce our new theme for guided reading...Volcanoes! Explain the integration of GR group and our earth science unit from science. Show students the new word wall, and hand out copies of "BOOM"/ start the pre-reading plan. Review genres. BOOM! is non-fiction, informational, content, etc. Ask students questions about title/cover page/predictions from pics, etc.
Development:
Explain word wall/unknown vocab procedure to be implemented. Introduce vocab that has already been chosen by teacher. Perform a group "book walk"; build on prior knowledge. Address any questions about words/headings/content.
Practice:
Students begin to read silently to themselves while teacher pulls each aside to begin assessment. Teacher begins running record by asking the student to read aloud.
Accommodations:
When all students are finished reading, teacher led discussion reflects upon new information introduced in text. Use the "AFTER READING SPINNER" to clarify any misconceptions. (Time Permitting)
Checking For Understanding:
Teacher models a mini-book that has already been put together/shares with group. (If C/E relationships and chain of events are not clear, show them teacher model volcano illustration)
Closure:
Open floor for quick questions. Hand out mini-book rubrics. Explain. Students are to bring 2 words for word wall next time. The words must relate to our Volcano/Earth Science theme.
