Unhappy I need help applying block scheduling to Drama Class?

We are going to A/B block next year and I am finding it difficult to visualize how this will apply to my subject area of THeatre arts. I mean a kid cannot stay focused on rehearsing for 90min. Any Suggesstions?

Lightbulb Mix it up!

I do the block. I find it great! Just include different modes for your instruction. I like co-op groups and working on projects.

Default drama and...

There's obviously more to a drama class than rehearsing. Personally, I would start to include instruction on the history of drama and the theatre, and how the history crosses over into all areas of the humanities. Have the students write their own radio broadcast, including script work, special/sound effects, etc. Schedule small performances for the other classes at the school. Be Creative!

Default Bad Block!!!

It is still amazing to hear that someone else "goes to block". Every indication in studies across the US says "ITS BAD"! (there are a few exceptions, called abberations in statistics). Yet there are still areas/groups/districts/people who try it. Its GREAT for teacher's (comfort level) planning time. BUT, after having spent time under it, having spent time in 9 schools who have tried it, having visitted many schools who do it. I can tell you that most of the students are not served well by it. Even if the teacher is an OUTSTANDING teacher, do the math. 36 hours lost per semester, the student's attention span is about 10 minutes (hard BRAIN research here, not what I think, or feel). Discipline incidents increase (can you tolerate a non stop talker for an hour and a half??). Student absences increase, and miss more work on the block schedule (there is hard data here). AND teachers actually cannot cover the same amount of material in the allotted time. Not to mention that test scores decrease (standardized) over time. I have watched as ALL the high schools in my 4 county area (and across the country) have gone back to an abbrieviated "traditional" schedule (8 to 10 periods/day) with an extended day. When will we learn? Block BAD!!
By the way, there are people who LOVE block schedule, it certainly seems to work for certain populations of kids. But after observing those kids who CAN do it. I still feel (can't tell by data) even they would be better served by traditional vs block schedule. IMHO

Default consider this

Create transitions within your block schedule. You kind of have to think of blocking as a college course. Could you last a full 1-2hrs. being drilled on the same things?
