English paper essay [HELP!]

I need some help on ideas and points to make for an english paper. The essay is:
Explain the importance of being open to new ideas...

A very broad and horrible topic. If anyone could offer me some good points or any help I would be grateful.

Is it really a research topic or just a topic to think about and write an essay on?

Where would the world be if we weren't open to new ideas? Even the church would be continuing to burn people at the stake if we weren't open to new ideas. WE would still believe the world was flat and that the sun was god racing his chariot around the sky.
New ideas have made progress possible and hopefully it is new ways of thinking about problems that will: solve the environmental crises that beset our planet, show us how to effectively manage terrorism (because the tired methods don't seem to have worked), help us to discover ways to transport oursleves and our goods before we run out of petrol.

Surely there is nothing, orl ittle more important to progress and development than being open to new ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
