Default Authentic Assessment

The assessment tools to use should always be in line with the learning objectives. It should be appropriate with the lessons in order to provide meaningful learning experience. A teacher must be flexible in using varied assessment methods. He should consider the validity and fairness of each method he would employ through the use of rubrics. Authentic assessment is definitely a student-centered way of evaluating student performance. But we should as well use traditional methods because they are already time-tested. In employing authentic assessment, the problems to be presented must be meaningful in nature so that students would elicit positive and constructive responses. On regular basis, we should not use authentic assessment. Some of the subjects are difficult to be provided with authentic assessment especially Mathematics. For this case, teachers must be intelligent enough in using alternative assessment tools. Teachers must also comply with several challenges of using authentic assessment methods which include managing its time-intensive nature, ensuring curricular validity, and minimizing evaluator bias. They must properly address these arguments so that learning of the students would be worthwhile and effective.

Authentic assessment is okay, but the world runs on standardized/normed tests. From student achievement, to getting a drivers license. From being a plumber, to getting a nursing license. So, we cannot discount multiple choice tests.

I do agree that we need to change the drill, kill, and memorize system. I have written an article on how teachers can actually assign homework in such a way that it becomes "authentic."
