I have been teaching English to a Chinese gal who already knows some English. It's not as difficult for her to grasp meanings of words since she has some knowledge of our language. When she doesn't understand a word, she writes it down for herself then looks it up in her dictionary or mine. It seems to help a lot that way. I sometimes break words down into smaller 'chunks' when possible, so that she understands better.

I also teach English to a man who speaks and reads Arabic, and he also has a hard time understanding some words, as you mentioned. A solution is having the same printed material/article in both languages so that they can compare and see the wording for themselves in their own languages.

Example: teaching the word 'ransom.' This word or concept was not understood until we used similar printed material in this person's own language, Arabic and he could compare the expressions.

Hope this helps!

Simply , try one of the following :
1.use the native language of learners.
2. use pictures or illustration on the chalkboard.
3. make simple questions.i.e let learners help themselves
4. and above all , develop your explanatory techniques
