Starting my first year of student teaching in just under a month and I am starting to get nervous.

Previously in student teaching I was required to follow the cooperating teachers rules, procedures, and grading system. Now I need to establish my own! How does a teacher do this on the first day? At the high school level do I need to go over a list of rules or should I expect the students know this.

What about grading procedures on homework, before some teachers used a check system (check if it was completed and 0 or check - if done poorly) how do I make sure HW isn't where most of the grades come from (yielding little to research and writing assignments)

Sounds pretty stupid I know, I am sure I will figure it out before the first day but I would like to hear any advice tips or other experiences.

Thanks
