Hi everyone!
I just accepted a new position as a K-2 special education teacher. I have 5 children in my class, which is moderate/severely disabled children. I am extremely excited, but even more nervous, as I have not ever taught special ed before. Any suggestions for open house, first days? I know procedures will have to be adapted, and I know I have at least one autistic child, a cerebral pasly, an Asperger's syndrome. I am not sure about the others
. Any suggestions on establishing a relationship with the parents and/or students? Or even on having a teacher's assistant? I have only taught 2 years, in 5th grade, so I have never had one before!

THANKS!

The way you talked about your students could be considered offensive. Remember the person first, label second rule. Parents with children of disabilities would be angry if/ when they over hear you talk about their child as the "one with Autism."

Remember, labels don't solve problems. They only qualify students for assistance. Once students have qualified it's your jobs to figure out their present level of performance, then work toward a specific goal as per his/her IEP.

Hello, I have an advice.
The first step is to review the IEP for each child. Then, use the student's abilities and strengths to improve his/her academic difficulties. Also, I would build a good productive relatioship with the child's parents. They can provide valuable inside information that can help you in your teaching. good luck.

You have been blessed to be able to work with these students. You must set your expectations for each of your students as high as possible. They will only acheive with the standards that you set for them. Set your curriculm for the highest level of the students in your room and the rest will work toward that goal. Know what you expect for each student and settle for nothing less. These are the best students to work with and the rewards will be great.
