View Full Version : First Day Story?
Anyone have a good story to the kids for the first day of school. I'm looking for something new.
A 1000 Thanks!!
Geri
I always like to read "Oh, the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss at the beginning and end of the year.
Another story that just starts a good discussion is The Treasure Hunt by Bill Cosby...it's a little Bill book. I also read that in the first week or so and talk about something that is special to them.
I also like to read Chicken Soup for the Children's soul.....just a great book to have around...not sure if it has something good to start the year out...i bet it does. I need to check that out for myself. My second graders last year loved the short stories from this book!
Good luck and have a great year!

I like to read Charlie the Catterpillar by Dom DeLouise
It's great for making new friendships at the beginning of the year.

"What Teachers Can't Do" is a cute book. Prior to reading, my students listed 3 things they thought teachers could not do. We read the story and discussed it. Then in groups of 4 the students discussed their lists and each student chose their favorite from the book. They wrote a sentence on a shett of white paper and drew a picture to go with it. We are in the process of making it into a class book.

I recently heard about the book, The Kissing Hand. It tells about a raccoon that is going to school for the first time and his mother kisses his hand. Then he is able to put his hand to his face all day and know that his mother kissed it. It is cute and gives you a warm feeling inside.

I thought I would set the tone for the year by reading and discussing a ‘Huck-Finn’ like story that I read from the Chicago Tribune this summer( Mississippi: A Young Man’s River 8/23/04).
A 22 year old boy from Hampton, Illinois (along the Mississippi River) grew tired of the trash that lined his treasured river. He petitioned the State of Illinois for assistance and failed to win their attention. So, one day with the assistance of private companies and corporations (ex. Cargill contributed $50,000) he leased a barge and some friends to begin cleaning the shoreline of the mighty Mississippi.
As of the time of this published article Chad Pregracke and his crew had cleaned 900 tons of garbage along the river and other rivers in Illinois and Ohio. His non-for-profit company this year will bring cleaning the Starved Rock area in central Illinois (which is along the Illinois River). According to the Tribune article Chad’s company (Living Lands and Waters) continue to gain popularity and respect with residents and environmental friendly corporations in the Midwest by returning the mighty Mississippi to its near pristine condition.
Mark Twain would be proud.

I can't remember if you specified a grade level, but this year in gr 5/6 I am going to read "The Important Book" by Margaret Wise Brown. Then I am going to ask the students to write a paragraph following the format of the book about themselves and then draw a picture. I will put all the pages together for a class book. (I got this idea of the net somewhere).

True stories always have the greatest impact.
You may also consider presenting real life situations that stress the results of failing to master reading and mathematical skills as well. For example, several years ago, I gave an example of each, and even "acted it out" dramatically, which was surprising to the students. The lack of reading presentation found me falling to the floor and having a "seizure." Needless to say, more than a few students still remember this "presentation." :-)

There is a really cute book for Kindergarteners called Twas the night before Kindergarten. It would be cute to read if you have orientation with the students before school begins!
