I am a student in need of examples of DRTA lesson plans for a class I am taking. The professor suggested we look on the web but I am not having much luck, the ones I am finding are vague or incomplete, so he suggested contacting some teachers, so I am here doing this. If anyone has any examples, especially for language arts, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

DR-TA as far as Direct Reading-Thinking Activity?

From what I understand, the standard method is as follows:
1) Begin with the title of the narrative or with a quick survey of the title, subheads, illustrations, and other expository material. (what do they think section will be about, why do they think so, what else could happen)
2) Ask students to read to a predetermined logical stopping place.
3) Repeat questions as asked in step 1. (predictions, refining, how do they know)
4) Continue reading to another stopping place.
5) Repeat questions.
Continue in this way to the end of the material.

I haven't student taught yet, but I used this method during microteaching (university sends you to a local school for about 8 hours and requests that you teach about one period) with a group of 10th grade students studying a chapter of Twain's Life on the Mississippi.

Most of the student feedback was positive; they appreciated the way the method broke up the material rather than just expecting everyone to read and suddenly "get it" at the end of the material. I did adjust the questions some from the standard list, though.
