Hi! I'm a 4th year teacher getting ready to start at an urban charter school. I am very excited to start at this school in August; however, I am a bit nervous because the grade level I will be teaching required a para in every classroom due to lack of classroom management (according to a trusted administrator). I have a strong urge to work in an urban setting, and to provide the best opportunities for my students. The school demographics are primarily African American and, though I have worked in a diverse classroom before, this is a primarily different demographic from where I previously worked (it was mostly Hispanic). I am nervous of how their parents will perceive me. I know I can not completely relate to my parents or their children (being raised in a suburban environment), but I know I will try my hardest and I feel we both have their child's best interest at heart. I will not give up on these students, but I am curious to know what other people's experiences are working in an urban setting with parents who may not trust a white teacher. Thank you for your help.
