In most competitions having math section, use of calculator is allowed, so many students don’t concentrate upon improving their computing skills. Do, you think that in this age of calculators, computers or mobiles etc, learning abacus may be useful?

calculators are one of my pet peeves. Students in high school use them,
but then they take college algebra or calculus in college, and they
can't! As a result, many lack the simple arithmetic skills needed.
Sadly, a lack of basic math facts and doing things in your head has
been lost. No wonder the US is getting behind. We really need to go
back and do times tables and mental math. Not only does mental
math ability improve math skills, it lowers the affective filter for
math phobia. I do a lot of mental math stuff and students are amazed
that things can be done without a calculator. Many are stuck in that
borrowing and carrying mode as well, not realizing that is actually a
bad way to do subtraction. The US is so backwards, it is not even funny.
An abacus would be a tremendous tool if used properly at an early
age.
