Refugee Utopias: Communalism and Violence in SE Asian Refugee Camps and Refugee Migrations
Instructor: Mitch Ogden, Center for Writing, University of Minnesota
Dates: June 22 – 26, 2009, 9:00 - 4:00 daily
This institute will examine the refugee movements and refugee camps of mainland Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar/Burma) in the wake of violent Cold War politics and into the twenty-first century. Our investigation will consider the significance of refugee camps across a spectrum of meaning, from transnational politics to personal identity and from immigration policy to cultural production. And as we grapple with the histories, narratives, politics, and theories of refugee camps and refugeeism, we will devise and design purposeful pedagogical applications that engage students in the relevant issues that support our curricular goals. Furthermore, we will be attentive to local refugee communities and students with refugee legacies in the intellectual and pedagogical work of the institute.
We will approach our course materials as epistemological lenses that refract, reflect, distort, and magnify the refugee camp and refugee experiences they represent. These materials will engage several disciplines (film and literary studies, history, and political science) through various media (film, essay, visual art, literature, hypertext). Thus this institute hopes to attract a broad, interdisciplinary cohort of teachers.
