Hi. I recently switched from Spec. Ed. to general ed. so many things I am doing are new to me, I was thinking of sending those welcome postcards to students home address the week before school starts, but wasn't sure if 4th graders enjoy receiving such a thing in the mail or if it would be a waste of time and money. My fourth grader loves mail of any sort. A card from the new teacher would be wonderful.

I'm in 6th grade and I'm sure my class would love penpals! I know I do! We all work together and are all willing and excited when we meet someone new. Any 6th grade teachers willing to respond?
Many thanks,
Stephanie

I have sent postcards every year. The kids love receiving the mail and it makes them a little less nervous on the first day of school.

Hi! I send postcards every year welcoming the students to "our class". After a week or so, I call every parent...28 or so... and touch base about school. I come up with a sincere compliment for every child. This is fairly easy the first couple of weeks. I call here and there throughout the year to keep connected.
A also send a weekly class newsletter home to keep everyone informed.....I have found if I establish a good rapport with parents from the get-go, I have a lot less problems getting them on board later when we have a discipline problem or something because they know I care about their child. Hope this helps!

oops! Forgot to tell you I teach 4-6th graders!
Hi.
We use postcards for their parents too.
Our favorite has the phrase from Spence Rogers, "Our Kids Are Worth Whatever it Takes" on the front of the card.
I get mine here: http://www.everythingaboutlearning.com/index.php?p=catalog&parent=46&pg=1
