What to do with the holidays and make it more than songs and cutting out paper? I found a great traditions unit concerning Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa on Scholastic.com. The unit is called Winter Holidays and my thinking is that it would go from high 2nd grade up to 6th. It reads all of the pages about traditions and the meaning of symbols. There are also some crafts and music ideas. Nice graphics and clip art too.

I know i'm not in grades 2-6 but as a student, from what you described, it sounds interesting.

Writing - My third graders are at an age where they still believe in Santa. This lends itself to a whole host of writing activities, including letters to Santa.

Social Studies - Holidays around the world is a popular social studies unit in many grades.

Reading - There are great Christmas picture books and chapter books for all grade levels. In third grade, we read "Santa Doesn't Mop Floors", a Bailey School Kids book. It makes for a great read aloud or Literature Circle.
