I'm a college student studying Early Childhood/Special Education. I am working on my Instructional Design course and I have to write a unit which is I have to write 3 lesson plans on the same subject. My subject is States of matter( Liquid, gas, solid) anyone have any ideas for lessons?? I also need some ideas on any books I can read to the kids about the subject?

I think that the easiest way for primary students to understand states of matter would be to observe the three states of H2O: ice, water, and steam. Have them figure out the temperature at which the states change.

Solid and liquid states are fairly easy to understand, but I imagine that many students will think of the gaseous state as nothingness. You may need to have them play with balloons and blowing to have the students realize that gas is something. (The molecules may be spread far apart, but they are still there.) Have wind or steam spin a pinwheel. Blow up balloons, measure their circumference with strings and then cool the balloons in a ice water bath and measure the circumference again.

Art projects could involve the water cycles and the three states of H2O. Cotton balls for clouds of water vapor, blue plastic wrap for water, and pieces of glass (with no sharp edges) or clear plastic for ice.
