For non-Texans: TEKS stands for Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills

Start by identifying which reading skill you want to teach. Then think about how you want the students to practice the skill. Then find a book that works for this purpose.

Example: Skill-Analyzing Characters, Practice-Venn Diagram, Book-Voices of the Alamo (this book contains different characters, from different time periods and cultures).

The lesson will be much more effective if you can get a class set of books. This is expensive so in the real world it is more pragmatic to use textbooks than picture books. Use the same thought process, focus on a reading skill and then use the textbook to practice.
