Hello, I am a History Major in Colorado. I am so excited to teach, but my impression is that there are no jobs. My biggest fear is not being able to find a job after graduation. I have lots of experience around children and have received excellent reviews on all of my clinical experience so far. Does anybody have any comments or advice for me?
Thanks!

Try to expand your appeal to employers by including something else into what you can offer them. For instance, offer to coach a sport, or be the mentor for an after school activity or club. You can also make it clear that you are willing to teach a class or two outside your major--do you have qualifications in your minor so that would allow you to teach English or math or science--something where they are likely to need a teacher to fill an extra period in the schedule? These are just things that may give you an edge over the other applicants for the position who have the same qualifications as you. Good luck, and don't stop trying.

yep, male Social studies almost need to be able to coach something, anything. Bus duty, anything like that will help.
Other than that, I'd be stumped nowadays, on how to get hired initially. Back when I did it, I had to teach out of field for 3 years in SPED in order to get tenured, and patiently wait for a social studies position to open up. Now, thanks to NCLB, you can't do that. And if you put ESE certification on your teaching certificate, you will end up getting a job in ESE very easily, but you would never be able to get out of it.
I sold myself as a SS teacher that would teach SPED kids (behavior SPEDs btw), that would sign up for bus duty (which noone else wanted) and I coached 3 sports. I was did my interview in less than 10 minutes, had a job offer on my phone before I even got home, and NEVER had to worry about not being rehired at the end of the year during my annual contract years. I got my tenure, asked if my current school had a SS job open, they didn't, I transferred to another school that did.

Hi,
Don't be so worried on that! There are many schools for you to choose from. Every year the demand of teachers to teach students (http://www.students.net) are soaring high. Usually those fresh graduates are the most priority of the Department of Education.
