Hello,
I had a BS in Physics and got my MS in EE from Texas A&M University in 1993. I was an engineer and also had some experiences in business, teaching and coaching.
After being a staying at home mom for some years, I am considering a teaching career because I always like to teach.
However, my main concern is my age since I am 49 now and going to be 51 or 52 years old when I finish the Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Preparation Program and get my Teacher Credential.
I was wondering if my age will be a hinder for finding a teaching position later on?
Thank you!

I am 53 and like you was stay at home mom for years. I have been teaching in private schools and have found they are desparate for Math and Science teachers for Middle and High School. Age has not been an issue... Not sure what it would be like in the public schools, but I am enjoying smaller class size of private school...

Don't go into teaching. I've 45 and it's my first year, though I got my degree in 1984. Dumbest thing I've ever done....low pay, 70 hours a week, no help in the classroom, nothing to help me when it comes to teaching but a text book. When I taught in 1985, I had no discipline problems,,,not so now. I even have 3 teenage boys so I thought I was prepared....NOT....
Basically, I've never felt so stupid in all my life and I was dean's list years ago.
I do have an elementary certificate also so am trying to find a job teaching younger children who still want to learn and not just pass the day away because they have to go to school.
The thing is, you get so attached to those kids in your classes and want them to want to learn so badly but you can't change them in 52 minutes a day. All they want is a snow day.....every day:):)
I spend so much money on them out of my pocket to make things fun. Next year I don't plan on doing that, but I know I will.
If you do it, good luck. Some are made to be teachers. At this point, I don't think I'm one of them, but when I started I wanted to be the best teacher there ever was. I've now given up on that. I just try to make it through the day, see my kids an hour a day, work on plans all week end, then try to make it through another week.
When I went to school, they didn't train teachers like they do now. Maybe that's the difference. I'm also a perfectionist.....not a good thing to be when teaching high school students.....
I'm still praying it gets easier next year or I will seriously have a nervous break down.

a lot depends on how attractive you are
and the gender of the principal interviewing you
go for female principals, you won't have much trouble getting a science job
(unless of course you are super attractive and blonde)
