I teach English in Japan, but I have a science background.

Last year, I had 4 Saturday mornings to "encourage students' interest in science" with some laboratory lessons in any field of science. I had about 12 students (first year in high school). English level was pretty weak.

I gave them some simple demonstrations in biology or biochemistry, and students tackled repeating them by themselves. Most were reluctant to use English, but so it goes. I taught it mostly in English.

This year, the administration has whittled my schedule down to a single Saturday morning, about 2-3 hours, to do the same thing. I can't really do the same stuff as last year, because some of the students will be the same. I'll also have second year HS students joining in.

Any suggestions on a lab-based project in biology that would fit this assignment? It's due sometime in September.

You could use a treed area and run chi square measurements on randomness of the plantings, pond water mearsurements of viability of the life and carbon levels at the different depths of the pond or lake.Other measurements could be the soil samples of pH to see what plant life grows best or what will outgrow other plants. Just some thoughts for outside labs for an afternoon or morning lab.

Hello,
I teach English in Germany (sometimes very weak level, too) and have made a 'Little book of water' with them. Was good fun and improved their language. If you want to know more, contact my email cinderella_9@comundo.de.
