Does anyone have any good ideas for teaching the Middle East? I have a
10th grade class and want some creative ideas to get them engaged. Any help would be great.

In a college level class on Modern History which my son is taking, one of the required readings is the book, Persepolis. It is an autobiographical graphic novel about a girl who lived in Tehran. The book ends with her leaving for Vienna in 1983 at the age of 14. It covers the overthrow of the Shah, the revolution which followed, and the beginning of the Iran/Iraq War from the point of view of a child.

This is a very easy read and students should be able to relate to the true story of a rebellious teenager. Do not be fooled by the fact that it looks like a comic book. It would be a great jump-off point for further reading and study of the modern Middle East.
