I need some help from you special-educ, autism savvy leaders in our field out there! I have a very bright, quick learner, interested in books, sometimes cooperative, independent worker who also has autism, is non-verbal, and is part of a self-contained behavior support class. When he's not upset he's a quick learner and is totally ready to read. He uses a PECS book, follows visual a schedule, understands visual supports and communication, and works a lot with pictures. I'm not sure how to have a non-verbal student start reading. What ideas do you have for me to try? I'm ready for a challenge! Have you heard of any programs, used any materials, made your own? How would I encourage output from him (in a manner other than speaking) to know if he is reading words accurately?

Hi Erin,
I recommend a paper by Temple Grandin, Ph.D. who wrote an article about his struggle with Autism that was published in 2002. Temple had autism growing up but was able to overcome his inability to read with the help of his teacher.
