Middle class kids come to school to sometimes learn. With support, getting up knowing your friends are there, if not that, a cute guy. This may help people get up in the morning to go to school. If your're just there for the fun, that is why you go.

Most kids are pretty happy to go back to school after the holidays. I think they get pretty bored at home. School is their major social connection. Most teachers make school pretty good place to be!!:D

I think that most kids like to be at school. Whether they will admit it or not. Why? Friends. Really good teachers. Too much homework to make up if they miss.

Well, me being a student, I think that most kids come to school because they are forced. As for me, if I had a choice, I would only skip a few days. But otherwise I would choose to come to school because I want to be a teacher when I get older. But even I had different plans for my life that didn't involve school, I would still come. I think it gives us something to do and I for one like to see my friends.

We go to school because we want to learn and get good jobs when we are older. I for one don't like the getting up at six in the morning but I do love seeing my friends and I wouldnt have any time to do that if it wasn't for school. I would still go even if we didn't have to...I might miss a few days though.

Kids go to school because it's where they see their friends most. It would be boring just sitting around the house and learning nothing new. Most kids hope to get s decent education - they don't want to be stupid.

Kids can learn on their own, but teachers can create some shortcuts, I believe, for them. Also kids come to school to get inspired, too. New ideas, new vocabularies, and new friends, are good for their souls.

Kids come to school for the social aspects at first. If the teacher can find a way to make the subject matter engaging, then the kid will come to school to learn. I can tell when I have hit that point, because I have kids who have their parents call me for information about what we covered. Heh!

I really know that I have made it meaningful when the kids tell me that they came in because they didn't want to miss anything, even if they feel sick. I get a lot of that.

There are always a few who say that school is boring. That reveals a lack of imagination on the part of the student. If a kid is bored, then he or she lacks the mental ability to make the thoughts and ideas in the head interesting. That is usually a sign that he or she has not had to make connections across the curriculum, imagine existence in another time, or devise a convincing plot episode. The challenge isn't high enough, so the kid isn't up to mentally entertaining himself or herself. The pace is probably s...l...o...w. I expect my kids to write a three paragraph short essay in fifteen minutes. Each paragraph has to have a minimum of seven sentences, and the ideas have to flow from one main idea into the next in a seamless manner. Can't cut it? Drop and give me five.

May Heaven help them in the future when sitting at the DMV, the doctor's office, a job interview, or anything else that requires a developed imagination.

A lot of times kids come to school to socialize and learn but you do have quite a few that are coming because the are on probation and are MADE to come to school. I think these students need to learn a trade of some kind since they are forced to come to school. They only cause havoc and the students that are in school to learn are not able to understand what is being taught.

why do you say middle class kids. my students are poor and most come to learn and also like seeing their friends. Most of my students when asked say they prefer to be at school with their friends than to be at home where "it's boring"

no sitters fee's, less mess in the house, less food eaten, keep them off the phone, vidoe games, TV, to socialize and learn the trials and tribulations that life will eventually bring to them one day, to help them find out who they are to know where they want to apply themselfs, last it's the rule in most states!

School being cumpulsory or voluntary is not the issue. It should NEVER be up to the kid whether or not to go to school. My child would go everyday, no matter if the state made her or not

Kids do not understand the importance of an education yet, that's why a parent should not allow them to have a choice in the matter because they SHOULD realize how important one is. However, collective common sense doesn't exist in the world anymore and the reason school is compulsory is because dumb-butt parents are a product of compulsory education themselves and they simply believe they are entitled to their kids getting an education rather than to cherish that education that many would kill for their kids to have the opportunity to sit in a classroom somewhere

I think that many students go to school because it is a safe haven for them. They know they will get a breakfast and lunch and the environment is safe from violence, drugs, etc.

Why do you think people die? Because they don't want to.

The same applies(Albeit, to a limited extent) here. Kids are forced to go to school, whether they feel drowsy, have to go to detention, or not. If it wasn't law that kids had to go to school, I think we'd see a major league decrease in student attendance. We would undoubtedly form a club that replaces the social network school creates. Then again, I personally am very bored outside of school, and I almost can't wait until school comes back to utterly destroy my daily schedule. Ah, learning. A double-edged sword.

Kids go to school because they have no other choice. Most parents are dancing happily in the shopping malls on or at the spas on the first day of school because they now have their freedom back. It's sad how many parents in this lifetime do not want to be with their kids. It's as if their only way to get rid of them is to send them off to school, then buy fancy video games and computers for them while they are home. I truly worry about what the country is going to be like ten and twenty years down the road. These XBox live players are going to be running things!

School isn't too fun anymore, not for some children who are taunted and ridiculed if they are different or live in a different area. Parents are too quick to shove medications down a child's throat because the teacher says, "I can't control Johnny anymore. I suspect he has ADHD." No, what Johnny has is a different learning style and he hates being in school because he can't learn his way.

School isn't ALWAYS a bad thing. Charter schools are becoming just as worse off as the public schools because parents are seeking an easier life for their kids, so they are overloading the charter schools and the school-choice program has also taken good schools and knocked them off the charters.

I think the whole system should be re-evaluated and changed. Until then, those who homeschool their children? Congratulations to you for wanting your child in your life.

Kids either come to school because their family culture places value of some tangible degree on education or because their family culture places value of some tangible degree on not getting reported to the truancy patrol or because their family is tired of dealing with them. . .which sounds bad but isn't that hard to understand.

If you took away mandatory schooling laws what you'd get is upper upper middle class students and Asian students with spotless attendance records while lower socioeconomic groups who don't put much value in education would drop way down. People in the middle would stay, generally, in the middle. Eventually, however, things would reach an equilibrium - kids would get bored, parents would get sick of having to deal with their kids all day, and sooner or later someone would start doing the math of no education = no job = no money = loser.

In the end the ones that would suffer would be the ones that are already suffering - kids who grow up in families that simply do not value education. (A big shout out to parents in this category: Thanks for setting your kids up for failure and have fun whining about life not being fair when the kids from families who value education over video games get their doctorates and buy their parents a corvette for Christmas. If you're wondering that's called karma. . .or common sense. . .try googling it)

Unfortunately the only way to leave going to school totally optional for students alone to decide would be to remove parents from the situation completely which is an eventuality so far removed from possible that it's not really worth considering. And while I recognize the purpose of such hypothetical situations are meant to garner a better understanding of what will "motivate" students in the classroom I find such purposes ball-shatteringly naive.

If you really want to see why kids go to school who don't have to go to a third world country and visit a school. Then whine about how school "isn't fun anymore."

Wow. This post just oozes empathy.

I'm starting to like you Rex. Of course, on this board, that may not be a good thing. People cry a lot when you post harsh realities like you have posted (in the 2 posts I've seen of yours

OK, choco, I will bite......in reading Rex's posts, it is apparent he has a trait that you have failed to show, over and over again. He leaves the bitter, narcissistic, and know-it-all attitude out of his posts. Perhaps he will be met with less criticism and more productivity in the replies to his posts, which is lacking in replies to your posts due to your constant need to slam anyone who asks a legitimate question. You don't seem to get it. It isn't the "reality" of your posts that angers people, it is the way you present it. NO ONE on here is reluctant to read posts that tell it like it is in, your words, "the real world". It is your obvious frustration and unhappiness with people in general that causes us to wonder how in the heck you get along face to face with your colleagues, wife and daughter. Lighten up, use this forum as a tool to learn, to share, to grow and take your frustrations with life in general to a psychology forum.
Gee choco, Happy New Year!

Kids go to school because their parents make them. Children do not have the proper frame of reference to understand why they need an education. Learning involves effort and most people do not enjoy doing things they find difficult.

Adults go to work because if they did not they would be living on the street. In life you have to do things that you do not always enjoy so that you will have the freedom to do other things that you do want to do.

You do realize there are places around the world without functioning school systems yes? Do you note any examples where this has resulted in a higher standard of living? Strangely enough not being able to attend school doesn't seem to be working out so well for millions of women who grow up in Islamic countries. . .maybe you should google that or something.

Luckily for you, however, there is a shining of light of hope just around the corner! Once you finish high school you can be done with school forever! Woohooo for you! What an exciting future (http://www.designerhigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/remote_control2.jpg) awaits!

a perfect example why kids shouldn't have a choice in whether they attend or not. They prove time and time again that they have no concept of reality beyond a week out of their present perspective
