Check out this article, "I Was a Journal-Topic Junkie." (http://www.writingproject.org/cs/nwpp/print/nwpr/795)
In this 1999 Quarterly article, Anna Collins Trest reflects on being seduced by a classroom fad of the time.

I taught K this year. I also job shared and it was my 1st year teaching. An ideal 1st year of course. But I found at the end of the year that my class did not write as well as the other K classes. I was like you. Modeling a scentence or having them try to write words about things I thought were GREAT and I now realize they had no connection to. Our Reading Specialist kept telling me about that connectivity, but I didn't really get it until I read this article.
Next year I am moving up to full time 3rd grade. I had already put a journaling idea into motion. I am so profoundly greatful that I read this article. I even went to the "30 Ideas for Teaching Writing" booklet online and downloaded it. This should make for a remarkably better year in writing for me.
THANKS!!!!!!! So much! Thanks!!!!
