Hi,

Personally, I feel homework is one of the most misunderstood teaching activities.

Homework can be an extremely effective learning tool, but only if done right.

First of all, homework should never be used to teach new material. Homework should be used to reinforce what was done in class that day or previous days.

There are also many ways to make homework interesting and fun for the students. I teach middle schoool school social studies. I have students write journal entries, dialogues, write short skits, create posters, write letters etc. They can be as creative as they want, but must follow certain guidelines. For example, when studying industrialism of the late 1800s/early 1900s, I have my students write a dialogue between a factory worker and a factory owner. The dialogue has to be roughly 1 page. It can be as creative as they want, but it must include 5 key terms from that days leeson. Of course, the next day the students pair up and act out their dialogue.

In this manner the students used homework to reinforce what was done in class in a fun way.

My ebook on teaching strategies has a whole chapter devoted to Homework. You can take a look here: http://www.teaching-teacher.com

Here is another quick homework tip: Always get your students started on the homework in class. This will clear up any confusion about what the homework is and how to do it.

Good Luck,
Adam Waxler

Hello, I sometimes have my students make crossword puzzles with the words of a certain topic (food, sport etc.) No dictionaries/no words that had not been used in the classroom. Who can reactivate most words a n d put them in the crossword?
Are you interested in penpals from Germany? Reading our letters could be interesting homework.

What grade do you teach? Where in Germany do you live? I will teach grade 5 History and English. I am interested in having German pen pals. You can email me at vrharg@yahoo.com.

So true, Adam. For the most part, it is akin to a manufacturer's "assembly line," with much focus on timely completion, instead of educational absorption.
