SO NOW AFTER A WEEK HAS GONE BY, I DO NOT FEEL LIKE ANY THING HAS CHANGED. IF ANY THING I THINK THE THEACHER FEELS LIKE I THINK HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO TEACH HIS CLASS. THE TEACHER IS TEACHING THE CLASS AS A WHOLE WHICH I MEAN IF THEY DO A SPELLING TEST THE WHOLE CLASS HAS TO GET A CERTAIN AMOUNT RIGHT IF THEY DON'T THEN THE WHOLE CLASS HAS TO RETAKE THE TEST UNTIL THEY PASS. HE HAS TAKEN THE SAME TEST FOUR TIMES IN TWO WEEKS. HE HAS NEVER MISSED A WORD YET HE GETS 100% EVERY TIME. BUT YET HE IS NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE ON BECAUSE THE WHOLE CLASS HAS TO PASS, IS THAT RIGHT? SAME GOES FOR MATH THERE STILL DOING SUBTRACTION 44-54. MATH COMES NATURAL FOR MY SON HE IS CAPABLE OF DOING 5TH GRADE MATH AND HAS PROVED IT TO THE TEACHER , BUT THE TEACHER FEELS IT'S NOT A GOOD IDEA TO GET HIM AHEAD OF THE CLASS BECAUSE THEN HE WILL START GETTING BORED IN CLASS. I HAD HIM TAKE A TEST FOR CHILDREN WHO ARE GIFTED, BUT THE RESULTS WILL NOT BE IN UNTIL THE END OF MARCH. HE EXCELLS IN MATH SO MUCH THAT IF HE IS NOT BEING CHALENGED BY IT, THEN IT'S LIKE HE ALMOST DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANY THING ELSE IN SCHOOL. SO FAR THIS YEAR I HAVE GOT 8 PAPERS BACK FROM WORK THEY DID IN CLASS IN ENGLISH, HE HAS DONE 3 ENGLISH PAPERS FOR HOMEWORK NONE RETURNED WITH GRADES COMMENTS,OR CORRECTIONS TO BE MADE. THEY DO MATH WORK EVERY NIGHT BUT IT NEVER COMES HOME GRADED OR ACTCUALLY IT NEVER REALLY MAKES IT BACK HOME AT ALL. THE TEACHER JUST TOSSES IT OUT. HOW DO YOU HANDLE A THING LIKE THIS WITHOUT CAUSING CONFLICT. THE YEAR IS ALMOST OVER AND I DON'T FEEL LIKE MY CHILD IS GETTING WHAT HE SHOULD BE OUT OF HIS CLASS. DOES ANY ONE HAVE AN IDEA, ON WHAT TO DO?

Maybe So They Don't Have To Correct The Work. That's A Tough One. I Will Start Looking To See If My Child Brings Home Workbook Pages Or Not, I Don't Have My Children Every Day, But I Will Ask There Mother Also. That Is A Good Question?

I think that what is going on with your son's class is wrong. The part that bothers me is the your son's teacher is not listening to your concerns and taking them seriously also, the whole class having to receive a 100% on a test to move on is ridiculous. What is happening is the students in your son's class, including your son, are being held back, as in, the students who are able to pass and do understand what is going on are being held back. I think you need to get in touch with other parents in your son's class and you need to let it be known that you don't feel this is right, and by the time children reach 3rd grade they should be receiving homework to practice the skills they do learn in school and there should be constant contact between teacher and parent...for example, weekly test folders that everything that is graded during the week goes into the folder to be taken home for you to see everything that has been graded and you have to sign the folder to take back to the teacher.
Just for the record, I am a teacher. You need to get some people together who agree with you and take it to the school board. Go over the principal's head if you have to. It is your child and your child's education, which is important!

Hi 'unregistered' - thanks for asking me for my input!

I have observed both styles of teaching - workbook pages and teacher-created work. There is strong advocacy for both.
With workbooks, teachers can take a little edge off their busy schedule, because someone has already created the lesson for them. However, there is much that must be done in order to integrate a 'programmed' worksheet into the school's state-mandated curriculum; worksheets can't just be tossed at the kids willy-nilly.
Teacher-created work often comes with the personal insights of the creator; they've had time (hopefully) to review the required curriculum, brainstorm with other teachers, and finally prepare a lesson that is both rewarding and interesting. More time intensive, but can be tweaked to the level of each child/class.

As to the issue of homework/corrected work, I must say I find this highly unusual. If the teacher is unwilling to return work, perhaps he/she is not reviewing at the school level, other than to mark "returned for credit" on it, while placing a random grade into the books. I don't wish to speak ill of someone I do not know, but your concerns seem quite real to me.

As a parent, you have the right to:visit your child's classroom at any time; speak with the administration at any time (provided they can be available);
review, with the teacher, your child's progress, including ANY schoolwork/homework. (At least, this is true here in CA - not sure where you're from!)

In your shoes, my first step would be to find other parents who have the same concernes as you, discuss a course of action, and sched. a meeting with the principal, VP, and any teachers that are involved.

Hope this helps!
Dennis

I think your son's teacher is not doing his job. Students need some homework, occasionally at the grade level you're talking about. As a teacher, if a parent has a concern, he or she schedules a meeting with me and the principal, and we talk about it. Perhaps you need to request a meeting, because maybe the principal is unaware of what is REALLY happening. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I Am The One Who Has Asked For Your Advice On {"why Do Teachers Think??????????"} I Am A Father Looking Out For My Childrens Education. I Live In California. Do You Think That The School's Teaching Program Would Have Any Effect On What Is Going On With The Way They Are Teaching At This School? The School Is In A [swp] . It Has Been In [pi] For Four Years.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT. I'M NOT QUESTIONING IF HE IS DOING HIS JOB. I GIVE ALL TEACHERS GREAT CREDIT FOR WHAT THEY DO. I AM GOING ON MY FOURTH MEETING NOW WITH THE PRINCIPAL. REPORT CARDS ARE COMING OUT IN TWO WEEKS SO I GUESS MAYBE THAT ALL MY QUESTION WILL HAVE A ANSWER BY THEN.

It might (see last post) but maybe not. You should ask to see the big picture. Not just the grade on the report card but also what content your son has learned. A good grade on a spelling test taken 4 times is pretty much "worthless". There are standards at each grade level which must be covered so the next years work can be done. Ask now before it gets too late to do anything about it. Most states are now posting the state standards for each grade level. Look for these. The school should also offer you a copy if you ask. :confused:

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT. I DON'T just LOOK AT THE grade on the report card, I LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE. I SEE WHAT HE BRINGS HOME, I SEE WHAT TEST HE TAKES, I SEE THE WORK THEY DON'T DO OUT OF THE WORK BOOKS. I THINK ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO KNOW WHERE YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER IS, IS BY MAKE A AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THERE SCHOOL YEAR. THAT'S HOW I KEEP TRACK OF MY SONS PROGRESS. I KEEP EVERY THING AND PUT IT INTO A BINDER FOR HIM TO LOOK AT THE END OF THE YEAR. SO WHEN WE ARE IN THE 2ND TRIMISTER AND I DON'T HAVE VERY MUCH TO SHOW, I HAVE TO WONDER WHATS UP. I ASK AT THE START OF THE YEAR THAT I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ALL MY SONS WORK RETURNED HOME. WHAT MY CHILD DOESN'T GET AS FAR AS SPELLING IN THE CLASS, I DO TEST HIM ON WHAT HE IS TO KNOW AT HIS GRADE LEVEL, AND A WHOLE LOT MORE. HE LOVES IT. There are standards at each grade level which must be covered so the next years work can be done. I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS ALL YEAR JUST FOR THIS GRADE standards.
